Changing 350z automatic transmission fluid brand!!
 

I notice that no one has ever changed there automatic transmission fluid to an other brand other then Nissan. The manual says matic "J". But my dealer told me J is now "S". What I want to know is can I use a simple brand like Valoline or royal purple instead of Nissan OEM? Just as ling as it is for my transmission.

Nissan engineers don't know what the hell they are talking about. Pickup a couple of cans of transmission fluid from WalMart.

J matic fluid has been discontinued from nissan, its called s-matic fluid now

They don't. If they knew they would have designed the 6 speed MT right in this cars on first place, still don't have it right after 9 tries. The front suspension as well (my '08 has serious cupping problem).

Anyway, they want you to buy their product so they say using other than Nisssan matic J or S will decrease it's performance and/or damage the trans. Amsoil, Redline, even Castrol Multi vehicle is matic J compatable, so will work just fine. I know 3ppl that use this fluids in Titans, Exterras for years without any issues. I have AT and will likely use Matic S, not because it is special, but because it's price is competable with the ones I mentioned, and there is a dealership down the street from me.
Also, I've seen vergin fluid analysis of the matic S, and there isn't anything special in it.

I changed it with Valvoline ATF shifts fine (at least today it did) the new ATF works for j,s,d so i figured it should word for my car too..

Hi All,

Last week I tried to change my automatic transmission fluid in my 2004 350Z. Car has 78K miles mileage and I think that ATF has been never changed before. When I was buing my car previous owner wasnt be able to tell me if the ATF been ever changed. I bought 12qt Nissan Matic S from USA (I'm from Poland). I tried dynamic replacement described in Service Manual.
OK I did it, poured same volume which was drained with checking fluid level on bayonet. Everythink looks ok, transmission is changing gears smoothly but after test drive I feel that car is less "agressive" to pressing acceleration pedal. Is it possible?
Is it possible to spoil something during replacement? Or it's only my strange feeling?

Drive it for a few miles and check the dipstick again. Best thing to do is measure the amount of fluid drained vs the amount of fluid you replace it with. That will also help determine if you're burning fluid. Most likely you need to add fluid.

I've put amsoil ATF in a few customers cars, no problems at all.

I understand that should warm up transmission and then check fluid level on HOT range of dipstick? I checked it on COLD range and its ok. I also thought to add more fluid but during replacement I measured amount of drained and replaced fluid...its the same. What will happen when I overfill fluid?
I dont understand how can I determine if I'm burning fluid by checking amount...

Autozone sells Castol Import compatible full synthetic $5 a quart
