Overheating? Yes I searched :)
Hey guys,
So I searched and came across many threads that are close to the problems I'm having, but I need it confirmed. Today I was driving home from work, and I'm in stop and go traffic and notice my Engine temp gauge all the way to H! I hear the fan on as well, so I know thats working. I turn my heat on to full, and i'm getting cold air instead of the expected hot air. I quickly pull over and turn the engine off. I open my hood, and to my surprise my engine is very cool. Nothing seamed to be leaking either. By the way, the outside temp is around 30 degrees F. So I turn my car back on and the needle is in the middle again. I begin to drive. In a matter of a few seconds, I hear my fan turn on indicating the engine is starting to overheat and sure enough the needle begins to rise slowly. I keep the revs down hoping to prevent it from going to H. Traffic begins to pick up and I'm moving at 45mph, and all of a sudden my engine temp goes right back to normal. I pick up speed and go to about 60mph, and still its fine. Than I start slowing down again, and the engine temp rises to near H again at slow speeds.
Is this for sure the thermostat? If so, is there a how-to on replacing it? Also, lets say it is the thermostat... is my engine really in danger of overheating just cause the gauge says its at H? Even though the engine appeared cold when I pulled over? Thanks guys.
