Need help with a 4runner, won't start
 

Hi everyone

I bought a 2002 4runner w/ 165k about a month and a half ago. I knew I'd have some growing pains with the car being that age, but I can't nail this problem down.

I pulled that starter and fixed that a couple weeks ago so that's not the problem.

The truck is turning over, sounds strong, but just won't start.
I replaced the fuel filter - no start
I replaced the plugs and wires - no start
Note - I tested the plugs after and it is getting a spark.

I opened an access panel over top of the fuel pump and I can't hear it making any noise and I measured the resistance of a plug on top per a toyota.
The resistance is supposed to be between 0.2-0.3; it read 0.9

I guessing the fuel pump is my problem, but I was wondering if there is anything else I should check before I order one and have to drop the tank.

Any ideas?

All I know about 4runners is that if I'm parked within 2 cars of one and start my z there alarm goes off lol hope that helps

There aren't as active and I've run out of ideas

Pour a small amount of gas into the intake and then see if it fires. Hold the gas peddle to the floor while doing this.

Things I would look at:

Fuel Pump, injectors, fuel pressure regulator.

I was thinking about trying this with starting fluid, is gas a better option?

If it does start under this condition it is a fuel problem not ignition, correct?

If resistance is bad, pump is most likely shot, however I like to be thorough. Loosen the fuel filter output line, key on engine off, if pump does not prime, no fuel comes out. Then double check fuel pump fuse, if ok apply battery voltage to pump side of the fuse circuit, if pump does not prime, replace pump. Would also be good to verify B+ signal is getting to pump. No money spent and almost 100% diagnosed.

This exact situation happened to me last Saturday. Mine would fire if I put a small amount of gas in the intake.

In my case, it was the fuel pump.

It could be a fuse, relay, clogged filter, bad fuel regulator, wiring, or something else. If you do not know how to test those things, you will probably need "in-person" help.

Edit: Your engine needs air, fuel, compression, and ignition. You have already said you have ignition. My suggestion will rule out the fuel as a possibility.

I'm thinking my next step is try the outline fuel filter line to see if it's priming, and also see if the pump is getting power.

One other thing I forgot to mention, I removed the EFI relay and switched it with one of the other relays (don't remember which one, but unrelated to starting up) and no change or I don't think it's the relay

would there be a fuse for the fuel pump?

I'm pretty sure there is only 1 fuse box and I checked those already

lol, this is a funny thread! Asking about a 4Runner on a 350z site. Besides that nice grab on the Runner. 2002 is a nice year for those. How much did she cost you if you don't mind me asking? They are great Trucks. I own a 1998 4x4 5speed w/ locker. Picked her up a little over a year ago w/ 168K. Since then I have traveled on many off-road trails and even a 3500 mile road trip in her. Sounds crazy but I trust my 1998 rig w/ 185K miles more then my 2008 350z w/ 40K. Toyota really built these things to last and even compared to the 350z the 4Runner is far superior Reliability and build wise.
