Changing Fluids

About to change out all the fluids on my 08 Z MT the ones in question are Clutch Fluid, Transmission Fluid, and Differential Fluid. I was curious if anyone recommends one over the other. I have searched the FSM and found what they recommended which was all NISSAN fluid.

Transmission Fluid: Nissan MTF HQ Multi 75w-80 or APl GL-4 75w-85 4-6QTS
Diff Fluid: Nissan Diff Oil Hypoid Super GL-5 80w-90 or APl GL-5 80w-90 ?QTS?
Clutch/Brake Fluid: Nissan Super Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT3 1 QT?

from searching I found MOTUL Transmission Fluid and ATE Super Blue Brake Fluid (not sure if the Blue Brake Fluid can be used for Clutch fluid as well most of the time Clutch and brake fluid go together. Looking to clarify this)

again I am trying to find out if there are any aftermarket fluids that are better or if I should go to the dealership and pick up all Nissan fluids for the job.

Also trying to found out how many qts of each are required. Thanks!

if this has all been stated before I apologize and must not have found it during my search.

I use all amsoil fluids, they have been continuously proven to be the leading fluids in terms of wear, heat cycling, and drain interval length.

http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/Vehic.../DATSUN+350Z+D

also if you go to this link they tell exact volume of fluid needed for any car, (07 z in this case)

Engine, with filter..........5.2 quarts [1]
Cooling System, Initial Fill..........9.2 quarts
AMSOIL Antifreeze and Engine Coolant
Automatic Transmission, RE5R05A Initial Fill..........Not Specified
Automatic Transmission, Total Fill
5 speed RE5R05A..........10.9 quarts
Manual Transmission, FS6R31A (6-SPD)..........6.1 pints
Differential, Rear..........3 pints
[1] After refill check oil level.
TORQUES:
Oil Drain Plug.....25 ft/lbs
Manual Transmission
Fill Plug 23-28 ft/lbs
Drain Plug 23-28 ft/lbs

I pasted the info they provided just for archive purposes.

fiy 1 pint = 0.5 quart

All my friends and I user ATE Super Blue brake fluid in all our bikes, and I plan to change the fluid in my 350Z after a complete flush. If we can trust a front brake only deceleration from 160+ mph with a tiny tire footprint, I think it should work well with our braking systems. I may even switch the fluid in my F150 since the brakes get a workout towing the bikes.

Apparently I read somewhere that the blue fluid won't be sold in US anymore due to the color confusing people.

SmoothZ 08-20-2013 06:01 PM

I believe that's in Florida. There's a state law prohibiting the sale of it.

kyle22 08-20-2013 06:02 PM

That's it^ I found it ridiculous, if anything it helps you determine which fluid is which.

It looks like it's on a national scale

Well, I guess I'll stick with Motul or try Amsoil.

taywan 08-20-2013 06:26 PM

I've read through the thread about changing diff / tranny fluid. I have went with Amsoil for the rear end and couldn't get an answer on tranny, but most said to stick w OEM Nissan GL-4 for 6mt so that's what I've been sticking with. Ive always used Amsoil XL synthetic for motor oil.

dkmura 08-21-2013 06:12 AM

My race and street Zs use the same fluids: brake and clutch- ATS Super Blue or Gold 200 (which is the same as Super Blue without the blue dye) DOT 4 synthetic brake fluid, tranny- Redline MT85, diff- Motul 75W-140 synthetic.

LubroMoly is the best!

zakmartin 09-16-2013 02:04 PM

I used Nissan MTF and not a problem. I used Amsoil in my diff and it grinds every time I start moving when it's cold (the griding goes away after 3 or 4 seconds). I'm going to change my diff back to Nissan before the winter weather sets in.

There's been some large threads on this topic and the general consensus is to stick with Nissan OEM fluids on pretty much everything.

taywan 09-16-2013 05:41 PM

I have to keep an ear out for diff noises. Its been perfectly fine lately.

remo1356 06-06-2015 07:34 AM

Except for the brake fluid and motor oil. I use Amsoil everywhere else. Mobil 1 0W40 for the motor and Motul 5.1 for the brakes.

mikpar 08-07-2015 06:51 PM

What about Royal Purple Fluids?? Their oil is very good...

Bak3rme 11-08-2015 07:50 AM

For brake fluid I used MOTUL RBF600
I used the same fluid for my clutch.
For tranny I haven't done it yet because of the weather getting colder and darker faster but from what I've read i'll be buying OEM fluid in the spring.
For diff i'm not too concerned but I'll get Redline or whatever people are recommending (I haven't seen a more favorable diff fluid yet that ppl use yet)

Also i'd do a power steering fluid change since its easy. I believe its just ATF fluid if i remember correctly. ATF fluid change was 10 mins with the hand pump from harbor freight. Didn't notice anything different afterwards but at least i had a piece of mind!

also coolant flush is pretty simple. Takes a bit of time to bleed the system clear of air tho!

dboyzalter 10-02-2016 05:22 PM

Redline Mt-85 is what I used in the transmission got 4 qts (needed a little over 3)

And used lucas 80w-90 needed 2 bottles

The pump I have didn't fit the redline bottle so I had to transfer it from that bottle to an empty lucas bottle, worked like a champ, just took a little extra time.

No real differences. Just make sure you use oil specifically designed for Maryland winter temps.
