Overheating at idea; Both fans are inoperative; Fix suggestions?

My 350Z was overheating on idle, both fans never coming on even for A/C. I was hoping it was just a fuse or relay, as what's the chance both died at the same time -- although I would not have noticed exactly when they died.

My mechanic looked it over and determined the fans are inoperative. He can get the fan assembly for $380 ($290 USD). Do I have better options, such as replacing just the motors?

(I looked over the forums and could not find anything definite, so thought I would ask the experts.)

not sure how both would go out at the same time. I would double check fan relays or fuses in IPDM, bad temp sensor, or bad connection somewhere.

jdm-v35,

This is exactly what I was thinking. I am going to double check with my mechanic, and see if they tested the fans directly with an alternate source of power to ensure it is the fans that are broken.

There is the possibility they died at separate times, as from my knowledge only one of the fans is used to cool the coolant and the other is used for the A/C. (Can anyone verify this for me?)

Just heard back. They tested everything and ultimately it came down to the fans. They put power and ground to them and the would not come on. And everything else checked out fine. Those are pretty much their words directly.

So, giving that the fans are broken, should I purchase the full assembly as noted in the original post or do I have options to buy just the motors? Curious to anyone's feedback.

pretty sure the fans are a single unit. Or you could just upgrade to SPAL fans for that price.

Looks like this is a common issue, as they created an extended warranty:

jdm-v35, tell me more about SPAL fans. Should I do this?

should provide better flow than OEM fans and will be thinner. For the same price point I would recommend it.

jdm-v35, ah thanks. And sounds like a proper upgrade to handle future engine upgrades.

Xon, JDM-V35 is smarter than me and I replaced my OEMs with a single 16" SPAL on a nascar-inspired setup but if you want a set of OEM fans off my 2003 touring/~62k miles I will sell/ship them to you pretty inexpensively...PM me if you're interested.

bealljk, thank you for the offer. I just PM'd you.

To end the story: I got it fixed at a local dealership and all is well. Nissan would not help cover the costs as it was not done at a Nissan dealership (which the closest is 300km away).
