Default Starter caked in oil. (PICS)

Hey guys, any idea how the starter accumulated this much oil on it?
I also tried to take a picture inside the bell housing in one of the pictures and you can see oil in there also (could be grease).

thanks!
(I just replaced my valve covers and oil cooler O-ring just this past week but have not turned the car on to see if it still leaks)

Bad rear main seal maybe? That'd explain the oil anyway. If you can cram a scope into the pinion opening, you might be able to catch a glimpse of how much oil you have sprayed around your flywheel.

What's the year and transmission type of your vehicle?
