sounds like cam sensors acting up. more times than not they won't throw a code until they completely fail, but will cause RPM stutters, misfires/knocking while accelerating and the car wanting to die at idle. Comes and goes like the wind, replace them with OEM, don't do aftermarket unless you want to get good at replacing them.

I agree with comments from OldManZFL. The camshaft and crankshaft position sensors are very suspect in your problem report.

You certainly are experiencing a total failure so I would expect that you can get a code that reveals the problem component..

If you decide to replace the cam sensors, i have a NEW pair of OEM ones still in the package, purchased from the dealer - $160 shipped. PM me if interested ($220 new from Nissan)

How many miles on your Z? If after replacing with OEM genuine sensors and issue still exist, do the engine compression test on all 6 cylinders, be prepared emotionally and mentally for the outcome.
