New key, engine won't turn over

Lost my keys, but still have one of the original FOBs.

I got a replacement blade cut by Nissan, but they said it wouldn't need any reprogramming since I still had the original FOB.

Got home, and tried cranking car...

- Hear the fuel pump prime
- Lights, fan, radio, etc work
- Starter tries to turn the motor over vigorously, but engine just won't start.

Called Nissan back and they're saying I need to tow it and get FOB reprogrammed...

Does that sound right? There's no chip in the actual key blade, right? Just in the FOB, and I have the original.

2007 has I-key... The chip is in the fob. The blade is just for emergency use. Is the security light flashing when you try to start it? Your column lock could be defective. You need someone with an advanced scanner that can read your BCM codes. If there's a "difference of key" code, it needs to be reprogrammed.

Are you sure about that? By "blade" i'm referring to the key that comes with the fob. You have to use the key (blade) to start the car.

Your '07 have a regular key, not push to start? Maybe I-key didn't start until '09. If you have a regular key, it has nothing to do with the fob. The fob just locks and unlocks and has no interaction with the ignition. Nissan keys have NATS chips in them. The car must be programmed to accept the key. Any mobile key guy should be able to do it if you have one original key. If you have no keys, the dealer has to do it. They shouldn't charge any more than one hour of labor.

Yes, that is right.
I had mine programmed through keys4cars (mobile car cut/program service) and if you do find the old keys they will no longer work after programming the new key

This is what I have been reading. Pissed that Nissan didn't seem to know how their own **** worked when I called multiple times and physically visited to ask and pick up the key....Mike Rezi Nissan in Atlanta...

Now they want me to tow the car for a diagnostic and IF it needs to be reprogrammed, the reprogramming fee is $240.

Will try a mobile locksmith.

Another option is to flash it with Uprev, we can completely bypass NATS and save you the hassle of towing and reprogramming.. plus it'll be MUCH more fun to drive with a tune.

PM me I've done it many times

Probably the best option. NATS isn't going to stop a thief that really wants the car.

Sadly...I've been debating selling the car or that would be the obvious solution.

Second kid on the way, and have gone EV and four doors...

Still considering keeping either this or the Miata for sounds and drive engagement.

Do the NATS delete and tune and you will DEFINITELY be keeping the Z ;)
