Dear God my HR dep't sucks

If anyone out there is a mid-level network engineer (3-5 years hands on the keyboard) with good general networking skills, good knowledge of Cisco routers/switches/load-balancers/firewalls, Netscreen firewalls and VPN technologies, and is looking for an easy $75-80K year, let me know. I'm hiring for a position in Reston. Includes ability to work coordinated days at home and limited on-call responsibilities. The interview is rigorous to weed out BS resumes, but the job is pretty good.

My HR department has sent me some insane resumes, and I really need to fill this position.

I've got somebody in mind for you. I'll send this to him and see what he says.

Excellent. If needed, he can send his resume to kcobean @@ real.com (unFUBAR the address, of course).

KManZ May 22, 2008 03:15 AM

System Engineer with 1 year on keyboard. 4 short, sorry Kelly :) I do have my clearance if that means anything, and 4 years active duty.

Not in the network engineering department, but we get openings in our NOC every now and again. Things are pretty fast paced around here, so they tend to stick to mid and senior level folks in the tier-2/3 groups.

Well, I certainly don't want to bust your bubble, but I've turned down at least 5 candidates who had Masters degrees but no experience. Unfortunately, this is just one of those jobs that field experience is critical in. The penalty for mistakes is measured in 100's of thousands of dollars due to service level agreements with our customers, that's why the requirement for 3-5 years of actual hands-on-keyboard in a networking field.

Possibly, if you're interested in working in Seattle.

ETA: I see you're in Atlanta. We actually have a Data-Center down there right across the street from Centennial Park, but it's an unmanned facility. :)

That seems to be the hardest part, finding that first job. I am half way through networking school and still cant find an entry level position.

SargentZ May 22, 2008 07:52 AM

Anything in the midwest? I'm looking and have 8 years hands-on with Cisco.
