Hater's gonna hate...

Went outside to my car this morning to find a zig-zag scratch on my windshield, and a few more on the left side of the hatch (as if my car isn't imperfect enough).

They seem light enough..but I was wondering if you guys knew of an alternative to taking it to a bodyshop? Like a compound or something I could use to get rid of these light scratches?

My main concern is the one on the windshield, thanks in advance.

don't know about the windshield, but Meguiar's Scratch X works well on the body/clear coat.

When I buy a car one of the first things I do is take sandpaper to it. I hate scratches and remove them all the time.

I had a scratch on a windshield and tried about 4 different products I found locally. All of them failed horrible, removed the main scratch but caused another few hundred in place of it. Hazing really bad.

Jewelers rouge is something people use pretty often but honestly if its deeper then a **** hair. I'd take it to the pros. I'm all about doing things myself and after my last experience I'd gladly pay to have it done right.

I almost NEVER say that. but for glass scratches......

Or try this. Get a piece of glass and scratch it, then try to remove it. Hold it up to the light and look for hazing.

What is raped? Paying anything over free? I think with insurance windshields normally cost $100 I believe with statefarm they offered 1 windshield a year but you had to pay the $100 deductible. (different from the normal deductible)
If you took it to a windshield place to have it repaired it might even be free. I know when it comes to filling rock chips a lot of times the insurance will cover it even without a deductible.

I'm sure different insurance companies all have different ways of covering windshields but most are pretty good since a clear windshield can reduce the chance of an accident.

Welcome to the start of life. At least once a month I have some random not expected expense show up. Wait until you buy a house and have the water heater go out flooding your basement or the A/c unit dies. Nothing like a 5-10K repair bill.

Shin Beats Nov 18, 2011 03:36 PM

Raped=going to any kind of body shop because this is what the majority of mechanics and bodyshops do, they rape you. This scratch srsly isn't deep, and I will probably try scratch X for the other scratches.

If I go through insurance I'm sure they'll increase my rates when it's time to renew, as if I don't already pay them enough.

jeffie7 Nov 18, 2011 04:26 PM

I've never had a body shop rape me.

As for insurance, again with windsheilds it's something that make prevent a crash from happening so chances are it wont change your rates. Hard to believe but you can pick up the phone and call them and ask what their windshield policy is.

I've had new windshields installed in 3 different cars over the last 10 years. My rates never went up.

Yeah that's not rape..guess I'll call my insurance.

Cass007 Nov 20, 2011 06:38 AM

Since you are a young guy Shin I would expect your comp deductible is > $200, so this may be an out of pocket expense for just the windsheild. Put in a claim for the body scratches at the same time to make it worth while and don't worry about a rate increase, comprehensive claims are non-chargable. You may need to file a police report for the insurance company to pay out though.
