Default I lovethe car, but...

I'm getting horrible gas mileage. I've had the car for 2 days now, with 280 miles on the car, about 250 of which was freeway driving at a constant 70. I have not been driving it hard, following break in, but the on board computer shows that I'm getting 16-17 mpg. Is this normal for break in? Is the reading accurate?

Thanks.

16-17 is in the ballpark. It will improve a little after 5k miles.
PS: That on board computer is not acurate for fuel info. Don't depend on it.

It's fairly accurate but don't hope to get down to the last tenth of a gallon. It has been my experience (ran out more then a few times) that is accurate within say 20 miles.

So if the readout says you are averaging 20.0 mpg on a 20 tank theoretically you should be able to go 400 or close to it before running out. On a Z using the guage I would not go any more then 380. I've never ran out using the 20 mile rule.

You're using Premium gas right? I wouldn't count on good MPG until the engine has been fully broken in.

Even then, you didn't buy the car for the great mileage did you?

yeah the gauge is not always right. I drive almost all highway and get around 400 to the tank. That number doesn't average out a lot plus it counts everything, even when you are sitting still with it on. I drive around that same pace (70-75mph) and that's when I get over the 400. Driving around that range should get you over 400 if you stay constant. I had my gauge read 442 one time after a fill up. But I was hanging around the 72mph spot then.

Thanks for the replies guys. Wow, 16-17, that's what I get with my M3. While it is true that I didn't buy the car for economy, I was expecting more out of a Nissan engine. So much for the 19-25 EPA mileage! I mostly do city driving, with a short stretch of freeway.

I haven't done the division, but with interstate driving between Virginia
and Florida my computer showed 25 - 26 mpg pretty consistently. With
rough figuring in my head, that seemed to be about right. My concern
is that I'm seeing feathering of the outside treads on my front tires at
5K miles. I was alerted to this condition (tire feathering/alignment) by
a guy who almost bought a Z, but got a V8 Pontiac GP instead so that
he could get his fishing gear in the car.

that doesn't sound too bad I have a 98 max and I get 18 mpg and 22mpg on the highway. At least it's not a hummer that gives you 11 mpg.

You know that your MPG has a reset button, right(press and hold the button till the screen clears)....you get 16-17 MPG after recalculating?

I use it alot and it automatically adjust it self to you're driving habits.

a couple of stop and go full throttle runs will knock it down in a hurry.

I would fill up, reset it and then see what it says the next time you fill up.

and even the next time you fill up you will have to reset it because it will start where you left of the last time.

for instance if you start of with 16mpg than you will have to slowly bring that average up and it will be totally in acurate and way off.

just reset it everytime you fill up and just check it before you fill up and reset it again.

I can't think of a better way to get an accurate reading.

When I first bought my car, I thought the computer was trippin but I realized after reseting the computer, it showed a more believable MPG.

hey man just fill your car up and reset the mpg on the digital gauge. drive about 70mph for about 5 miles adn you computer should adjust to about 30 mile per gallon.(be sure if you have a manual gear box to put the car in 6th gear and you should average on a long trip about 540 to 590 mile per tank only on trips though. daily driving you should see about 360 mile to the tank
