looks like i'm getting test pipes...

anyone want to guess why?

2004z May 9, 2004 11:46 AM

Do you happen to have R/T Cats?

Balls May 9, 2004 12:18 PM

that i do

KarmaMag May 9, 2004 01:10 PM

another track day coming up?

2004z May 9, 2004 02:49 PM

Did your cats crap out on you too? (I read another thread with the same thing happening to another forum member.)

failsafe May 9, 2004 04:17 PM

Uh oh- did yours fall apart too? Or just buying test pipes to hope to avoid it?

Balls May 10, 2004 11:09 AM

i guess i'm not 100% sure what's going on just yet, but basically i pulled an o2 and the shielding was dented.... so i reached in and felt what was probably the innards of the cats moving around inside.

I haven't had time to look into it further.

failsafe May 10, 2004 11:38 AM

crap- not good. Keep me informed of the status- hope mine are not next. I have about 10K miles on mine and haven't noticed any problems.....yet.

I was thinking about getting some......is this an on going problem with them???

Balls May 11, 2004 08:36 AM

i guess i'm a little biased given my situation.... i definitely think that it is something to think about. As you can see in this thread, my riddle was not very difficult to solve. So yeah, it is not uncommon. But you also have to consider the other people who bought them and who haven't had problems. It seems that there are still a whole lot more of them than there are of us.

Balls May 11, 2004 09:05 AM

btw, i'll probably have the issue sorted all out this weekend so I'll update then....

Thanks for the input.

True that there are many people running the RT cats. But there have been a disturbing amount of people who have had the same problem.
George- did you purchase your cats as soon as they came out- or a few months after? I'm particularly concerned about mine since I bought them right away.

Balls May 11, 2004 10:05 AM

i got them just before that december trackday....

Balls May 11, 2004 10:06 AM

like a week before... so, early december 03...

failsafe May 11, 2004 10:22 AM

hmmm I wonder if it was a bad batch? It would be interesting to see if the purchase dates are similar for the problematic cats.

I've seen a few post where the cats fall apart in less than 2000 miles. I've had mine on for ~12,000 (inc 2 track days) and no problems thus far. BTW mine were purchased in Oct.

Balls May 15, 2004 08:31 AM

i just crossthreaded three bolt on my exhaust.... =\\\\

guess it's time to upgrade the hoses get some carbide... which will probably rule out that track day in june....

Balls May 16, 2004 09:27 PM

=\\\\

Ok, I got the cats off and here are the pics...

http://www.pbase.com/balls/deadcats

Basically both cats were screwed but the left bank (seen in all the pictures) is much worse. The o2 looks hurt but I wonder if it's okay to use. Hilltop Nissan quoted me 170$ per sensor. (kragen, napa, and the like don't have it listed yet) The right bank sensor looks unscathed. So I might just get one.... or none? Any suggestions on that?

Balls May 16, 2004 09:29 PM

oh btw... the third and fourth pics in the gallery, are of what dented the o2 sensor...

hehe... it almost looks like it melted...

fowlman01 May 17, 2004 06:04 AM

That looks bad!!
