Digital SLR camera advice.
 

Thanks in advance. I got the bug to get a nice, easy to use dig SLR. I'm partial to Nikon just b/c I think it's got a better name behind it IMO.

So what's the best under $900(or less) SLR? Is it the Nikon D50 or is a Cannon (or other mrfr) better?

Also when I get one what else should I get? Should I get a 1G mem card or 2 500mb cards?

Any other advice??

Canon or Nikon, Nikon or Canon. Personally, I think that Canon is slightly above the curve, but that's based upon what I've read about the Digic II processor.

I ended going with the Canon 350D (Rebel XT) and I've been happy with it. You can get one with kit lens at Dell for ~$750 if you can wait for the special deals.

You might want to compare pictures that were taken by both cameras from sites such as photosig.com. Word of advice, there is a nice learning curve with D-SLR....

I'd go with a 1G CF over 2 cards that equal the same storage size.

Do you have lens? If so I'd stick with the lens you already have.

Nikon felt more solid in my hands.

Canon seems like a better bargain for the value.

Either way I'd say digital SLR is a developing sector and cameras will be drasticly different every 2 years for the next 5. You don't want to spend too much right now.

besides that, I think the 350D is a good value unless you can bargain hunt and find a decent used 20D for the price point you're looking for.

Go with the 1gig. At 8 megapixel, 1gig get filled up pretty quick. It also depends on what you are shooting. If action shots such as motorsport, you definantly want to go with the 1 gig, that way you won't miss out on the action while trying to switch cards.

im thinking about buying a canon 350d also. would you guys recommending buying it with the kit lense, or buying just the body and a higher quality lense that can still be used for general purpose shooting?

Laura got a Cannon Rebel XT 8 megapixel, and it's great. easy to use, take pics very fast, a 512 memory card will hold 129 full-size pics. So far we haven't been able to fill up the memory in a day (the first two days we had it was at the SJ Grand Prix, and we blasted away).

The out the door price was something like 1300, with mem card, warranty plan ($50), sales tax and I'm forgetting something else. The sticker price was $950, I think.

I haven't played with a Kodak or Sony equivalent, but I'd be happy buying another Cannon.

Especially when you're shooting RAW instead of JPEG.

Agreed. I am using a 1GB card on my 20D and shooting RAW + Large jpeg I only fit about 80 shots on it. I have a second 1 GB card but its a pain to switch them out. I am thinking it might make sense to get a 2GB or 4 GB card and keep it in all the time.

Thanks, I'm still looking. Anyone have the Nikon coolwalker (hard drive storage device)? I'm wondering how it'll work with the Nikon D50 since it has a different mem card than what the coolwalker accepts. Should I wait a while or look at some other type if storage/display?

Since the Nikon D50 is newer I wonder if it's got some extra (more advanced) processing than cameras that have been out for a while?

Is there a good review web-site to look at?
