I just changed the clutch and while it was apart, switched to a lightweight flywheel. The old, original clutch had 178,300 miles on it, and still worked just fine; the throwout bearing made noise...

This strongly sounds like the rattling sensor sustained damage and is busted. Alternatively, the TPMS sensors (or at least one of them), may be nonfunctional due to expired battery life.
