Build motor/buy crate/swap motor????
So guys to start i have a 2003 performance z. I have owned the car a little over 2 years. I have about 120,xxx miles. I am debating on whether i should buy a new motor, build the current motor, or do a swap. What are the pros and cons of each? Would love to hear from experience. Thanks guys.

^^^ This. Kinda wondering why a car with only 120k on it needs a motor.
And, exactly what are the goals for the car?
No one can recommend anything unless they know how the car will be used.

Nothing wrong with it. I really would love to get about 400-500 whp. I am looking to have a decent amount of horsepower but still have the ability to enjoy it as my daily. At least until i can get another car.

You throw that expression "400-500 whp" around like its casual and nothing.
Here's some reality about the Z for you...
The ONLY way you're going to get those levels of power is through FI and a serious amount of ECU re-mapping, colloquially known as "tuning"; along with all the other ancillary modifications you need to have.
In order to sustain that and boost your Z the RIGHT WAY, you can run with your existing engine AFTER a thorough go-through of the long block and adding all the supporting mods - brakes, suspension, driving lessons, etc. Figure on about $12 grand to get you started.
Another option: throw in a Corvette LS motor. Done.
It's like I said in another thread concerning boost.... You can put $12k into a Z's twin system and net about 450-500hp at the wheels OR... you can spend a tad more and buy a car that already has that amount of power and have two cars to play with. Your choice.

This is true
I'd add that 400whp (maybe 425whp) is the breakpoint for $10k to $15k. If you want 450whp to 500whp it's $15k to $25k
Read other members builds and do what they did (i.e. dont reinvent the wheel). If it was me, I'd buy a built block from IPP or Z1 and then add your FI of choice and supporting modifications.
FI price menu:
350whp - 375whp = $7k - $10k
375whp - 425whp = $10 - $15k
425whp - 600whp = $15k - $25k
600whp - 800whp = $25k - $50k
800whp+ = $50k - $100k

I've bought from them many times, never had a problem.
