Default Transmission rebuild/swap questions?

So, I took in my FX35 to the mechanic today for a diagnostic and it turns out that my transmission has water in it(they think driving through a puddle may have done it). So, it looks like the transmission needs to be rebuilt/replaced. They quoted me a really high number(more than half the current BB value) The car is a 2008 FX35 rwd. What I want to know is what exact transmissions can I replace it with. Doing a search here it seems like 35HR and 37 are out of the question. But, will a trans from a 06-80 350z, G35, M35, or EX35 just plug and play? What about the 09 FX35, which has a new body, but had the same motor and I think trans plug and play? Or could there be some ecu issues? I ask cause I see I can get trans from those cars at the junkyard for a fair price, and then have a mechanic swap it in, or use the parts for the rebuild, which ever is the easier and lower cost option. Suggestions are welcome.

Okay so it seems like EX35 and 2009 FX35 trans won't work as those come with VQ35HR motor. Will a 2006 350z or G35 DE trans work on the FX35 or will ecu have issues? Better yet, anywhere I can just get the transmission internals, seals, sensors gaskets, and radiator? Maybe avoid the whole transmission? Could I use internals of say a 350z with the HR motor, or will ECU still be an issue?

Each product from Infiniti/Nissan is designed with a specific need in mind. The automatic tranny in the FX has software designed with that vehicle in mind. With multiple sensors feeding information back, it's no wonder something is bound to have a problem when you try to mix 'n match parts.

Not sure what you mean by "avoid the whole transmission", but if you transplant a Z33 VQ35HR and it's tranny into a FX35, the FX ECM will likely not recognize some of the signals being sent and you'll undoubtedly end up with several problems. Unless you've worked on a tranny before, I'd say, leave it to a professional tranny shop. They'll be able to source parts and put it back together the right way.

If you're trying to do a "poor boy" repair, you're sailing into trouble. These are sophisticated vehicles at that level of troubleshooting.

Thank you for the reply. So do you know is 2007 FX trans parts work or do I have to stick with 2008?

You're welcome. I do not know whether an '07 tranny will work in an '08 FX. There weren't any major changes between the two model years, so I suspect it may work.

I take that G35 or 350z DE transmission would not work, due to ecu difference? I am able to source those transmissions more easily than FX35 one for 2008, and a new one is $3500 at a few places I looked at.
