Default R8 Coilpack in a VQ

Any one ever heard of or done this?

There is a fellow on one of the Facebook groups i'm on that is claiming decent gains from changing out the coils.

If this can really help this may be another option from when trying to get all the HP money can buy.

Interesting, my preference would be to get rid of the COP system altogether and use LSx coils and leads instead.

IMO Nissan coils are better than Audi R8 ones.

Why? Doesn't this produce more voltage loss?

Is it possible that the coils he replaced were just old and weak? There was a test done not long ago that showed the GTR coils were the best of the bunch (something like 20 different ones were tested). I don't have the link or remember were I saw it though..

If the gains are real, this is pretty cool. Though looking at at these packs, several of them are 120 a piece. That adds up quickly

I do see a lot of bigger builds running the AEM coils. But at $5 for the coils and another $100 for wires/misc it's an investment for sure.

I wonder if #2 finisher (R35 & Z34) also included the Z33 coils based on association.

Might be something I look into down the road.

I saw a used set from a 370z on ebay for a hundred bucks. For that money I'd test the concept.

Mainly to get the coils away from heat to improve reliability and, perhaps, performance. Better accessibility too.

Funny, I asked him this because I thought the exact same thing! I haven't heard about the GTR coils, I'll definitely have to look into that.

I wonder how the split fire 350Z coils would compare to the r35 ones, also how the okada ones compare....

After watching coil pack tests done by PRP, i wonder how Rico tests his plugs.

I compared pictures of the 350 and 370z ports. They look compatible. Anyway I ordered a used set off of eBay this morning so I'm officially going to test the concept.

I'll post my findings and a couple of pulls for comparison. Street, not dyno. What am I made of money?..

HR/370Z coil packs will not fit a DE, the spark plug end of the HR/370Z coil pack is smaller than the DE, it physically won’t fit over the DE plug.

You could maybe try swapping plugs too but I don’t think it’d be worthwhile.

All you gotta do is swap the boots and it's all good, spark plugs are universal tho

My thoughts exactly. The coils just came in so I get to try it out after work.
