Everyone is so paranoid to show their plates. I laugh when I see pictures with it blurred out or with a finger over it. Like I said, you drive with it out in the open every day, why try to hide it? I don't know of any case of someone's information being discovered from their plate number. In actuality, the only people who have access to that resource (or, at least, should) are law enforcement officers.
So, again, I'm certain that OP does not just want this for car shows.

Well duh, so why are you asking if I know the name of it then? It’s a license plate flipper upper thingamabob.
So, you decided to keep the hard starting drifter Z instead of trading your show car in for a “real” Initial D car OR that restored AE86? Good choice.

This was my initial suspicion, which is on the lighter side of what I could have suspected.

Just an FYI OP, if you do want it for "car shows", you may want to confirm it's legal to possess in your state. Notice I said "possess", and not "use". Certain states, such as MD, and places such as DC outright ban them.
This is the penal code for TX:
Sec. 504.9465. LICENSE PLATE FLIPPER; OFFENSE. (a) In this section, "license plate flipper" means a manual, electronic, or mechanical device designed or adapted to be installed on a motor vehicle and:
(1) switch between two or more license plates for the purpose of allowing a motor vehicle operator to change the license plate displayed on the operator's vehicle; or
(2) hide a license plate from view by flipping the license plate so that the license plate number is not visible.
(b) A person commits an offense if the person with criminal negligence purchases or possesses a license plate flipper. An offense under this subsection is a Class B misdemeanor.
(c) A person commits an offense if the person with criminal negligence manufactures, sells, offers to sell, or otherwise distributes a license plate flipper. An offense under this subsection is a Class A misdemeanor.

Of course he is. Well, luckily for you, it won't be much more than a moving violation. This would be pushing the envelope under the statute, but I'm sure you'd give plenty of other reasons to be stopped and cited, judging by the video sourced by Detective Travlee. Even if challenged in court and thrown out, who cares, you'd have to take time out of your day and I'd be getting overtime. Just the inconvenience on your part would be worth it.
