I'm leaving for 20 days, should I shout off gas and electricity?
The utilities usually gives me a 3-5 buffer so just about 30 days. I don't know if it will be worth saving 30 bucks.
|
yes, and water too
|
Yes! Definitely with the gas portion, you never know when an earthquake might hit. Just make sure you turn off the power strips to the electronics (TV, stereos) in the house first, otherwise when you get back and turn on the electricity the surge could damage your equipment.
Oh, but if you want to have an answering machine on that could be a problem. |
Thanks I never thought of the disaster. Answer machine can be solved by switching to an automated answer.

I turned mine all off when I went for a 6 week Vacation last December.
|
do u have servailance cameras?
|
i think you should tell me where you live!
j/k. It won't matter if the earthquake hits and your gas is shut off. Your neighbor's are not anyway. I usually leave everything on. I don't want the hassle of turning it on and off. and it's only a few bucks anway. |
Charles you don't have a relative or friend that can stay at your place while your gone. I could not leave that long with out thinking " what if " for such a long time it would drive me crazy. I also what to stress the fact on how much someone notices no one is home for a while even though you think they don't.
|
Here is my advice. Use a timer in two separate rooms. 1 in living room that turns the lights on at 6pm to 10pm, then the other in the bed room that turns the lights on at 9pm to 11pm. That ways, it looks like someone's home. And make sure to submit the stop mail request with your local PO. And have your friends pick up the junk mails, newspaper and what nots.

That 30 bucks I save will go to the TT funds.
|
you wouldn't save $30 for tuning it off. there will be no kilowatt usage, therefore no charge. prolly get charged 5 or sum'n. I'm thinking about IP camera survellance (however the hell you spell it). Then you can check it from any computer.

for my old job i used to travel all week, every week... i inquired about shutting that stuff off. granted i was in colorado and not cali, but i dont think it is worth the hassle.
turn your hot water heater all the way down (or off). if you live in an area warm enough, turn off your furnance. if not, turn the heat down to 55-58 degrees so your pipes don't freeze and the pilot light (if you have one with a pilot light), kill the pilot light on the stove. shut off the gas lines, empty your fridge and unplug it. unplug all other major appliances, including stereos and what not. some appliances use power even when off, so unplugging them will solve this problem. This should pretty much take care of any usage. Stop your mail and newpaper, or have someone pick them up. Have some stop and check the house every few days if you want to. |
shout it off from the rooftops.
