I actually did this once. A large racoon had gotten hit by a car and was suffering bad. It crawled into my front yard and was swaying around. Went inside and grabbed the AK...Boom, no more misery. Felt bad for the poor thing. It was huge, went down quick though.

I feel you bro. I love animals, especially the 'innocent ones'. Many years ago, I was leaving my friends house who lives in a bad part of Los Angeles. It was night and I was backing out of his driveway and this car passes behind me, so I stop and let it pass.
As I continue to back out, I look over my shoulder to check for more cars and as I look over my rigth shoulder, I see something writhing in the street. I decide to turn the wheel and head the other way (from where I originally intended to go) and go towards this moving object.
Because there were street lights in the street, I didn't have to drive far to see what it was. It was a tabby coulored cat that had been ran over. I remember that it shoulder \ chest \ head area was down on the asphalt and that it's hind legs, tail, and lower back were all over the place, squirming. The car must've ran over it's shoulder or paw or part of it's face and it was just tossing itself in agony. For a moment, I thought about running it over with my Sentra but the animal was too big and I could probably hear bones crunching not to mention the gore. I just turned aroud and left hoping that it would get put out of it's misery soon.
Went home and gave my cat a big bear hug, lol. My cat, in the 20 years that it lived with us, never got ran over or hit. He always looked both ways before crossing (seriously) however, there was one time where I was brushing my teeth late at night and something told me to just walkt to the living room and look out the window and sure enough, there was my cat, just sitting (literally) in the middle of our street. I ran out there with toothpaste suds dripping all out of my mouth as I went to grab him. Even as I approached him, he just sat there calmly.
Lord, I miss our cat.

Squirrels get run over all the time. They often get out half way, change there minds 2-3 times and it is pure luck if the tires miss them. I saw one run into the side of a wheel once. At least your squirrel died fairly quickly and wasn't tortured to death by a domestic cat.
