Anybody been in Vegas for New Year's Eve before?

Just wondering how Vegas is at that time. What should I expect? I heard there were fees to walk around in some areas. Where's the best place to be for the count down? Also, any recommendations on where to stay would be greatly appreciated. Keep in mind, my budget is kinda small. Thanks a lot. Happy Holidays!

I just got back from Vegas and I stayed at the Monte Carlo. It was my 3rd time and I stayed at the Mirage and MGM previously but I liked the MonteCarlo the best..I would suggets the Voodoo lounge on the 52nd floor of the Rio..It is really cool to overlook vegas from that height..But I cant imagine what thing will cost on New Years eve in Vegas!!Most of the clubs are 10-25 cover charges but on New Years your looking at big $$$$$..

if you like to party and have high energy-crazy-fun, go to Ghost Bar or Rain at Palms casino. i'm sure if you're staying at a hotel/casino, any bar/club there should be suffice, they all should be packed with people.

We went for the 2000-2001 New Year's
Eve (the real millenium, lol).

The strip was closed off and we did the countdown in the intersection between Bally's, Barbary Coast, Caesar's. That was crazy and fun.

Like daking said, the voodoo lounge has a really cool view of the strip (b/c it's off the strip). Any club should be pretty fun though. We went to Light at the Bellagio the last time we were in Vegas but it was a PITA to get past the snotty velvet rope.

OH! If you are driving back on New Year's Day, it could take you as much as EIGHT HOURS, and that's if there are NO accidents.

My buds and I were there last new year's eve.

All i got to say is "holy Sheat!!!"

The whole street is PAAAACKED shoulder to shoulder. I recommend not trying to move around the strip a half hour before the countdown it is like a circus!
We were a little intoxicated and we're trying to move down the strip about a half hour before the countdown....next thing I know...I lost all my friends and we spent the first few minutes of the new year with total strangers. It's a crazy experience though.

Looks like the heart of Vegas is between Caesar's Palace and Paris but it's so packed you won't miss a thing...everywhere is the same.

I reccommend finding a place a little bit away from the strip so if you need to get around it's easy for the taxi's to leave your hotel. You're gonna need a taxi to get around anyway unless you're roaming the strip mindlessly drunk.

Have fun...maybe we'll bump into each other..who knows.

One other thing...bring some patience! ;) People tend to get aggravated when theres so many folks around. And if you see a restroom and need to go a little...just go. Chances are...when you really need to go, most of the casinos around you will be "for guests only" or lined up like the DMV. :p

Is it true that they section off parts of the strip or casino and charge you to go in there? What goes on at the count down? I'm guessing fireworks or a ball dropping... Anyway, where do you recommend being for the countdown? Or is it pretty much the same up and down the strip? Thanks.

Yes.

Yes they do close off certain casinos and sections for safety purposes I guess...but I don't remember being charged to go anywhere. Most casinos will have "guest only" policy when it gets waaaay too crowded. You might get charged if you're going to a casino with alot of bars? i'm not sure.

What happens at the countdown is...all those huge TELE screen things they have in front of each major hotel will countdown the numbers into the year. As soon as it hits that time...every hotel sets off their fireworks and its just chaos. There isn't really a center to it all but I find the front of the Bellagio by the pond/fountain is the most comfortable place.

haha you got flakey friend too? we're planning for this new years but no one ever gives a positive answer...they wan't a spot to go but at the same time they want to be able to bail if things come up. I guess we should collect some hotel money and make a binding contract! :p

Good luck...and be safe!
