So Cali doesn't allow OBDII scans for free..?

I had my service engine light come on, and just wanted to check it. So I went to just about every parts store, and noone allows a free OBDII scan...man...

Does anyone know where I can get this checked?

As far as I know, Pep Boys will scan for free. They won't clear any codes, but they will scan it. Try a local mom and pops shop?

New CA law that passed a while back. That's why you can't purchase them over the counter anymore as well. :dunno:

That is so lame, wouldnt they want people to know the code so they can get it fixed right away. Not everyone brings their car to the shop.

Apparently the argument that mechanics utilized was that their livelihood and potential salaries were being hurt by having scanners available to the public. :dunno:

You can still buy scanners. Just all of CA wont let you scan for free. Yeah...it sucks.

But not allowing lets say "Checker Auto" where they can scan it and sell you the part is just lame. Also for the mechanic part, just let the shop charge a small fee if they feel the need.

Either way i'm good, my Cobb unit takes care of this, then i have friends to take care of the other cars. Also i'm only a part time Cali person.
