DFW Boosted Z's. I need help.
 

I' have made the decision. FI here I come. I have searched, but I would like two cents from boosted guys that daily drive in this crazy Dallas heat.

1. Prob no Stillen (don't like the hood looks)
2. I have seen a lot of Prochargers for sale here. (that makes me worried)
3. From what I have read, sc are better for everyday than a st or tt.
4. I would be happy with 320-360whp (not looking for show car, just a lil more ummpphh)
5. $$$$$$ seems to be in relativly the same ballpark for most FI systems.

I would love someone to share their knowlage with me. Like what accesories am I going to need before the install. Should I stregthen the block?
New cams?
Headers?
Pistons?
Glow kit?

I have done alot of homework, but company's won't tell you their catastrophic failure numbers.

I don't agree that SC vs. Turbo is better for daily driving, the turbo will almost be unoticeable during cruising while you are constantly turning the SC belt which loses some pretty big #'s on the tq/hp side.

Plus you have the constant whipple of the SC all the time.

In Dallas:

- larger radiator
- larger oil cooler
- vented hood
- high perf water pump (not sure if needed on the newer Z)

What about warm up and cool down times for turbos. My future brother in law has a st 240, and he always talks about letting it warm up (no big deal) and cooling down (sounds like a pain in the ass).
Also what about overall maintnence.?

Baldwin, are you doing the install yourself or paying someone? Just curious because finding a local shop to do the install + tune (assuming you don't want just an out of the box map) would also play a factor.

Oh yeah, for cooling down I have a turbo timer. Supposedly, it's not really needed with the APS kits because they are water and oil cooled. It was a cheap mod, and I can turn it off or change the settings whenever I want.

If I went with a supercharger I'd install (friends in my garage) and have it pro tuned.
I don't mind waiting, so i'm just going to get as much feedback as possible and decide from there. I'm in no rush.

Cool down is no big deal, if you were running the car hard, let it cool before shutting it down, does not matter if it is water cooled or not. For normal driving, no need for a cool down. Turbos are the way to go. I have been working on turbo Z's for about 12 years now (wow, has it been that long?) and if you take car of them, they will last even for daily and track use. One of my cars has been tracked and daily driven off and on for eight years. I have yet to see a sc last that long.

One big thing I recommend: tune on the street. And not just WOT. The partial throttle setting is what takes the longest to set, but gets used the most. I can't tell you how many blown motor post I have seen here where they were at partial throttle when it went. A dyno is just no substitute for the real world.
