04 DE breather mods, tuned/dyno

Hi guys. Last week I dropped my car off with a bunch of boxes I’ve been accumulating, mostly bought here from the forum. They installed a plenum spacer, some APS high flow cats, an APS 2.5” cat back exhaust that was modified for turbo use by fabricating a great looking Y pipe, and a full Nismo intake that already came with the car. A bizarre note, I know I had ordered the 5/16 plenum spacer but they said they had to modify the strut bar to fit it, so that makes me think I received a 5/8, but anyway it’s installed.

They did a quick dyno pull for me before I left, needless to say I was sorely disappointed at 188hp. He said the dyno was a “heart breaker” SAE model or whatever and that nearly everyone is surprised when they see the low numbers. That’s with 19,000 miles, a couple thousand above sea level, high humidity, and probably 80° out. 6 speed MT.
I was a bit concerned and called the tuner back asking if he thought my motor/clutch was ok, but he reassured me it was normal.
Anyway, he sent me the new numbers after everything was installed, gained about 37hp and 39 ft pounds of torque, which actually surprised him. Haven’t picked the car up yet as he’s concerned about the rigidity of the exhaust and wants to add a flex, but says the car sounds awesome.
Cant wait to try it out.

Been trying to upload the dyno forever, nothing :(

188hp is extremely extremely low - your car is really really down on power! An average middle of the road 350z bone stock and/or some minor mods will make 230 to 240hp!

With your mods and a tune you should be closer to 260hp ... something is wrong

Yea it sure has me thinking. It “feels" strong and powerful, but that says nothing. He says they don’t detect clutch slip, and there’s good compression, maybe his dyno is off??

On another note, what’s up with the new upload feature.... browse device, pick photo, it "loads" onto window, I push Upload, then it disappears. It’s in my Album too. Will keep trying....

Sounds like a bufu shop to me.

I'd be more concerned that it runs well than what the numbers say. Is there another tuner / shop you can go to?

Try using the 'advanced' features to upload - sometimes mine does that too!

Maybe, but they come highly recommended and have a great reputation, and follow up work if needed.

In design, or what do you mean?

jv350z 11-12-2018 12:02 PM

Welds may be nice, but by eyeball, I'm guessing that the volumetric flow rate will be reduced with this ypipe.

guitman32 11-12-2018 12:30 PM

Did they tune it as well, or just install the parts and re-dyno?

Wet feet 11-12-2018 12:39 PM

They installed everything and then actually tuned it. I think he said they were on the machine a good 5 hours or so.

I get what you mean on the y pipe. Originally I had walked in the shop wanting a dual set up, but he said there’s usually noticeable torque loss down low that’s difficult if not impossible to tune out. So he recommended a y pipe.

guitman32 11-12-2018 12:54 PM

Alright well in that case nothing sounds too crazy...the absolute number is less important than trusting the gains on that specific dyno.

in design... isn't much better than than the stock one in my opinion. here is the stock de vs stock hr y pipe

see this thread

Yea I’ve read lots of y pipe threads, and you may be right. I could throw a Motordyne in there someday. I imagine even as it stands the new one must flow better than the stock crap.

So basically my reason for posting was to get feedback, so I appreciate that. I’m wondering if the 37-39 gains were about on par for what I did? As that’s what’s most important, not necessarily the numbers themselves.

bealljk 11-12-2018 01:16 PM

the Y-pipe looks very nice and sure there may be some inefficiencies with the 90s but it's not the reason youre down 40 additional HP...

Wet feet 11-12-2018 01:47 PM

I do believe there’s another dyno shop here, so I’ll probably go by and do a comparison. I’m curious what differences or discrepancies may show up.

The motor itself runs fantastically and feels strong.

I wonder if theyre running a zero correction factor??

I believe you are correct, or perhaps the SAE, going to find out tomorrow. Will post.
