Default Favorite Retro 350Z Promo Video

This early Z33 Fairlady video was released back in late 2001. It remains one of my favorites with its blend of black-and-white imagery focusing on reactions to the Z's styling back when it was a new model. Intriguing views of Z33 styling when pre-order information was still rare and hard to come by:

So, here we are almost 17 years later. What do you like (or not like) about this early promo vid? For those Z owners who still remember those heady times, what was your favorite Z promo?

I like it.. I think the commercial perfectly expresses the essence of ''Z'', in that less is more. No extra unnecessary marketing, no narration in the background reading off specs or accessories.. Just pure, primal performance speaking for itself.

those were the days DK!

marketing has come a long way ... now it's all about love, caring, sharing, butterfly kisses ... and giving a ride to the g'd referee that blew the call in the hs football game(toyota) ... or seeking the approval of a shelter dog when you put a jacket around the owner shoulders(subaru)

I still like the barbie / gi joe van halen 300zx commercial ...

I took a class in film literature back in high school and the one thing that I learned from the class was how to watch for hidden messages.

Standouts:

0:55-1:00 - "Viewing my future and I can't wait."

1:25-1:30 - Related to the above: "Now that's what I'm tawkin' about, screw this bike.... oh, wait, gotta wait a couple more years but that's what I'm getting!"

1:40-1:46 - "Beauty in beauty's eye."

But yes, the teasing imagery, the use of classy women of all ages telling one that this is a car that transcends age.

Love it!

Your interpretation may vary. Laff.

But my all time favorite while on topic.... "The Run":

Think about this when you watch it: "Hoooo, I be drivin' the forward view cam car." Hahahahaha..... yummmy. Wonder what it is....

Most every Z person has seen it (but if you haven't, watch it!). I watch that vid at least once every couple of months just as a reminder that my car needs nothing more than calculating hands, feet, a deft touch, and sharp mind to coordinate all.

Anyone tell me where I can find those things?

Thanks - that's a god one, David. My favorite is still the 300ZX ad with GI Joe, Barbie, and the Van Halen soundtrack. Perhaps the all-time best car commercial of all-time, regardless of brand.

The lead-in to this video says it all: "Lust Before Love". Pretty primal stuff...

Good points on current marketing practices. With the move towards making Millennials the priority, their emotional needs have probably been analyzed to the nth degree.

Like you and Dean, the 300ZX Joe/Barbie commercial is my favorite Z32 ad. It's in stark contrast to Nissan's current Star Wars promo tie-ups. Nissan's current ad head honcho worked for Disney and is spending a large portion of the ad budget with his former employer.

As David's unofficial, semi-faux, semi-real, self appointed, no one asked me, and gratis campaign manager, I'm proud to issue the first campaign slogan for his 2020 run:

"A real Nissan Z racer for President - T'hell with taxes, A vote for me will lower your lap times!"

"And you can take that to the bank!"

And there you have it. Another late breaking, exclusive news item brought to you by my350Z.com!

Hah! Thanks to bealljk for the nomination and to Mic for pushing me out there. And while you might notice I studiously avoid any politics in my postings, I will say that if things continue to go the way they have, we might need another prez SOON. IMHO the bar has been reset quite low for that high office.

Back OT, thanks again to Mic for a reshowing of "The Run"; one of my fav short films. That was produced by Nissan North America and shown in movie theaters in '02-03. Interestingly enough, the NNA rep assigned to the production crew was Dan Muramoto (no relation), but I do get asked about that from time-to-time.

I noticed that for the first time this viewing.

Was gonna ask but figured you'd say something if there was any blood relation.

BTW, I did a pic-search for Dan Muramoto to see if I recognized him thinking maybe he was around at Nissan when I was - fat chance cuz that was a lonnnnnng time ago and I's old - and did not recognize him; but, this came up almost right next to him on goopics....

I'll be using it for the dkmura-for-prez campaign.

I spend too much time on YouTube. That's my excuse. I had that on my favorites for a long time after I first saw it.

That one is right after my own heart!

Fun thing is that I'm doing it backwards all over again.

Love it!

RE: That Fifth Gear episode bealljk posted, I remember seeing this when I was considering going from my Mitsubishi Eclipse to the 350Z back in late 2008. The song they used in the video ("Heavyweight Champion of the World" by Reverend and the Makers) pretty much cinched it for me.

I suspect y'all are more enamored with the woman complaining about the shift light with her charming accent.*

To quote: "Oh yes indeedy, the 350 Zed still remains one of my all time - EVER - favorite cars."

She's definitely all about the driving.

* Now of course, our UK brethren are thinking, "Huh, wot accent?" Laff....

This episode of Fifth Gear was one I missed. Interesting to look at a euro spec Z33 and realize Nissan still spec'd the "old style" Rays six spoke wheels on the mid-model Z33 upgrade. Hard to tell from the shots, but the Zed used for this episode looks close to a USDM Touring or GT model. Direct comparisons to the euro-spec Cayman and BMW Z4 were interesting as well.
