it also depends on the road and the conditions. if its hot/humid, expect less gas milage, regardless of the rpms. if you drive on mountainous roads also expect less gasmilage. i dont think certain rpms affect the gas milage greatly. if you try to keep the car in 6th gear all the time, without looking at the speed, it wont neccessarily improve the milge. my philosophy is to keep the car in rpms where the engine is most effecient. i would say about the VQ that its pretty efficient between 2k and 3000 rpms. just try.

:icon17: :icon17: When my Z car is parked for extended periods of time in the garage I sometimes don't have to gas up till I take the car out on the road again. Not really sure waht the RPM's are when the car is not started but the gas economy is fantastic.

I'm usually around 19mpg or so... no real highway driving.
But I split time between the Z and a Suzuki GS500F which gets about 50mpg so it evens out.

i feel you on that one.... i haev a 98 maxima with 215k miles...still runs like a charm! its bttr than the Z on milage but hey, at least ya still gotta loev the Z

So you're saying we can get better gas mileage with the Z by staying between 2-3k? Althought i might shift between 2-3k, I always try to stay in the tallest gear for my speed and keep the rpms below 2k. because the Z has a lot of torque, even below 2k the car has decent acceleration for everyday driving. I always thought that keeping it in gear at a lower rpm would give better mileage?

i did this test over and over again, and honestly it seems like JUST TO get the best mileage out of the car on a highway, being in 6th gear at EXACTLY 2000rpm gave me readings of 29-33 mpg.:)

but then again it doesnt last long.....at some point theres like this 'voice' that pursuades you to push everything, the volume, gas, turns and by the time you know it, youre off the exit with a quarter tank gone lol.:icon14:


lately ive been driving back and forth from the city at 55-60mph to get the best mileage and there are so many ppl that wonder why is this dude doing something with that thing?!?!?!??!:confused:

what i said is that your car does not neccessarily get the best milage if you stick it in 6th gear and drive at a 35mph speed limit. even though the z has really good low end torque, the engine is not as responsible as it is when working at 2000rpms or above, due to its design. (90% of the tq is available from 2000rpms to 7000). below 2000 the motor does not utilize the gas as good. thats my .2 cents. it is an empirical statement. if you dont agree its cool. let me know if i am wrong

by the way i did not buy the zed to get milage. i just cant resist to push it. there is always going to be something. i dont know, it just me. but i like it.

ive noticed that keeping it in 5th gear when tooling along at 35-40mph gives the best throttle response and mileage in town.

keping the RPM's low all the time is not the only key to helping your fuel economy. you are still just wasting gas if your RPM's are low but the engine cant move the car because its struggling against a tall gear.

interesting.... I always go in as high a gear as possible when driving through town and my mpg every week for the past couple months has been about 21 mpg. I will test out your theory about keeping it between 2-3k rpm and will post in about a week to see if my gas mileage shows an improvement or loss. thx :)
