What's your oil pressure?
Sup everyone?
I've only had my car for a few months and never looked too much at the oil pressure gauge. All I noticed before was that whenever I got on the throttle at all, it pretty much jumped all the way to 120 or whatever heh. Anyways the previous owner said he always used Mobil 1 5w30. When I changed my oil for the first time I decided to try out the "German Castrol" 0w30. All seems well but I noticed that when I'm idling (once the car is warm), my oil pressure gauge is reading about 5-10 PSI.. I mean the needle is just barely past the 0 mark. When I am cruising on the hwy it reads about 45ish. Does this sound normal or is that too low? I checked my oil and from what I can tell there is the right amount in the engine still... Thanks in advance for your help! |
I get around 28 psi fully warm
|
Just noticed yours is an HR. Don't know if they're that different though. 5psi sounds too low.
|
oil weight is too thin, likely why you barely see pressure at idle. 30psi at idle and 45-60iss at cruising speed is normal.
|
Thanks for the replies.
But since they're both "30"s they should both be the same weight when warm... From what I read here, a lot of people recommend the German Castrol 0w30. Maybe someone else running that will chime in here. Keep the responses coming please, I'd like to know what everyone's oil pressure is at! |
'08 5AT with 2800 miles
I started using 5W-30 full synthetic at the first oil change at 1900 miles. 110 psi at cold start when the engine goes to 1800rpm After warmup, it's 25-30psi at idle and 60-65psi at 2000rpm. |
Cold start 120
cruising 60 idle around 30 |
what he said^^^^^
|
If I'm really on it, like above 5 or 6 k RPMs for extended times or doing multiple pulls, when I come to rest the pressure is usually around 20PSI, but when I drive it normally like an hour on the freeway the pressure is just a hair under 30PSI. While cruising it's around 60PSI. cold start is about 110-120PSI and falls quickly once it starts warming up. 5PSI is too low, change your sensor or get a real sensor on there to see if the reading's accurate, sounds scary. I'm using mobil 1 5w30 btw, and have been for the past 30k miles.

if you would would kind to help me out.. any word on what ever happened to the z? I'm experiencing this at 49k miles hr nismo. My 06 just went out, was reading 90 psi all the time. Now it's at 30 warm idle. As stated above 15-30 is acceptable. If not, change the pressure sender. |
You can also confirm that the sensors are malfunctioning by using an external oil pressure gauge. At normal operating temperature (oil temp is 176 degrees Fahrenheit), pressure should be equal or greater than 14 psi. At 2,000 rpm, it should be equal or greater than 43 psi.
You likely already know this, but on a cold start or prior to the engine oil getting to normal operating temperature, the psi will obviously read higher. |
VQ35HR, 57.000km, just replaced the oil gallery gaskets. Oil pressure now sits at 30 PSI exact, warm engine, idle. Mobile1 0W-40.
Before that it was falling under 30 PSI, that's why I replaced the gaskets. |
