18x9.5R and 285/40's ?
 

I'm looking at doing a set of 18" TE37's (18x8.5F/18x9.5R) and had a quick question about tires. I really want to get some BFG KDW-2's but they don't make them in 275/40-18, but do in 285/40-18. Will the 285/40's fit in the rear (its only .2" bigger radius than stock)? I've never heard of anyone running this size, but figured I would ask. Front tires are no big deal though, they make them in both 245/40 and 255/40.

If you have TCS/VDC and you use the 245/40 you will need to use the 275/40 to keep them happy.

I have 285/35 and they clear the car fine even lowered. Not exactly what you were looking for but I figured I would throw it out there.

So to keep VDC happy with your 285/35's what front tire would be needed.

Im currently running 245/35/19's front and 285/35/19's back on a 8.5/9.5 inch rims. I have no issues with VDC. I wouldn't run 285/40's tho since the 35's are near stock diameter.

Not sure never looked into it, but probably something like a 235/40 not sure if they make that, but if I had to buy new tires I was going to go with 275/40 or 295/35 I know 295 is suppossed to use a 10 in rim but I was told I could squeeze the 295 on a 9.5 rim.

well since you are running 19's and I will be running 18's I'm not sure everything holds the same. Any other input would be most helpful.

Great question. This is exactly what I was also wondering, running LMGT4's 8.5"/9.5" with 285 in the rear since that's all KDW-2 offers. I don't know about VDC, but I don't think TCS would be a problem.

Wow 285/45 is big. That is a 1.4" larger diameter. I don't think I will ever try that. Also isn't 285 a little wide for a 9" wide rim?

After looking more into it, I think I might just try and avoid the hassle and go with a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's instead. 275/40R and 245/40F. They are a little more expensive than the KDW-2, but they should have equal traction, a stiffer sidewall, and are a little bit lighter.

Oh and while I'm at it I should probably just go ahead and verify that the offset I want is correct....

This should not create any problem with rubbing on my Z with Hotchkis springs (.8R/.6F drop)? Also, is this the best offset setup for the most curved look in the 18's?

people make it a lot bigger of a deal than it really is about VDC

285s are the largest you can fit on a 9.5 and would be perfectly fine. I usually try to fit the largest tire you can fit on the rim while trying to stay as close to stock diameter as possible. 275/40/18s are 1% smaller and 285/40/18s are 1% larger so in my book, both are perfectly acceptable. Any larger (295s) and I'd go to a 35% sidewall.

On my 1 car (G35 coupe) I run a front 265/35/18 on a 18x8.5" wheel and the rear, a 295/35/18 on an 18x9.5" wheel. It's a good balance. IMO, the best for overall grip and performance though, is a 285/30/18 front on an 18x8.5" wheel, and a 315/30/18 on a 18x9.5" wheel on the rear. And on 19's we run 275/30/19 on a 19x9.5" front and a 305/30/19 rear on a 19x10.5" wheel. All of these clear on lowered Z's and G's and perform great! :D :)

Heh yea it really isn't ideal. The tires were brand new mounted on the wheels and I got them for pennies so thats why I threw them on the Z, they wernt even intended for that in the begining. They have done me pretty well, but I am looking forward to going back to the lighter weight track rims
