Tell me why this wouldn't work...

This is one of those things that sounds too simple to be the answer to a problem.

I need an 18" x 9.5" wheel in a +30 offset. If I were to take a 18" x 9.5" +22 offset, and have the back of the wheel shaved down 8mm, wouldn't it then be a 18"x 9.5" +30?

The wheels I am thinking of don't come in the +30 offset. They are concaved spoked wheels, so the lower the offset, the more concaved the spokes, and the happier I will be. I don't really like the way the wheels look in a +35 offset, which is the other option with a 5mm spacer.

Why wouldn't this idea work? If it would work, why don't more people do it?

By shaving off 8mm of the mounting pad you will dramatically weaken the area where the lug nuts seat. They seat at a 45° angle and that surface area is what holds the wheel to the hub. If you make that area thinner, the wheel can literally rip through, leaving the lug nuts in place.

How do I know this? Seen it happen. TWICE.

Ahh there's the obvious answer I was looking for. I knew there had to be something. Thanks!

You may not be able to balance the wheel.:(

Have you looked at the Rota P45r? This comes in your specified offsets.

Shaving sounds like so much trouble.

Rotas are HEAVY.

not really... they are cast just like alot of the other wheels out on the market today. Alot of these volks and works and whatnot are not forged.

And which book of misinformation did you get this from? :icon8:

Z33Benny Oct 13, 2006 03:44 AM

do you really think ALL volks and works are a 100% forged wheel? some of them... like the GT line of wheels are a cast center with a forged lip. SF's, TE's and CE's are forged.

Work emotions are a fully cast wheel.

you should try reading into that "misinformation" book sometime ;)

i thought SF line of rims are also cast centre with forged barrel?

Mathmatically speaking, yes, it will work. The better question is do the hubs have 8mm of room to play with - most wheels won't have anywhere close to that amount of room.

Here is your comment that I was responding to....

If you want to get technical....

Comparing a 1 piece wheel to another 1 piece wheel, then yes all volks are mold forged, CE28N, TE37, and the new RE30.

The 2piece wheels do use a forged barrel. Unfortunately they have to use a cast center due to the complicated designs associated with their disks.

But the main point is....you stated the wheels aren't forged when in fact they are in some way.

Z33Benny Oct 13, 2006 11:12 AM

maybe i should have been more clear in saying that they all arent 100% forged. Either way.. a quality wheel, is a quality wheel.

Vq.turbo.DremZ Oct 13, 2006 12:07 PM

Have they released pics of the RE30's? havent seen um yet.
