20" vs. 19" SSR's?
 

I realize that I'm risking getting flamed for (i) low post count, (ii) being a noob, as the common vernacular goes, and (iii) not searching the forums, but rather than expound (defensively) on the myriad reasons as to why my question has relevance (which appears to be the proper way to ask these types of questions), I'll skip to the end and just ask the question:

I've had my eye on a set of 19x9 / 19x10.5 SSR rims. When I went to go close the deal, the guy hit me with this: he'd sell me 20's for $100 less per wheel.

I've been lurking in the wheel forums seeing what people's preferences are, and it seems like 19's are predominantly favored. My question then, is do I take advantage of the better pricing and go with the 20's, or do you guys think it will it be too blingy? Rubber prices are about the same. Saving $400 would be ideal, but I don't want to look like one of those Jag's with rims that are too big.

i think you can get away with 20's... which wheel specifically are you considering?

The GT3s. They aren't popular on this forum, but there's a black roadster out there with them on it that looks hot -- and I'm hooked on the split 5 spoke look.

20s would be baller but you need a drop to make it work. If not it will look really 4x4ing :icon38:

+1 on the SSR, can't go wrong no matetr which style you end up with. I was considering the GT3s but went with the GT-2s

dude gt3's are hot! get them but dont put them on til you slam your car. btw where are you getting them from?

sweet -- I'm glad someone agrees -- the only place I could find them was tirerack.com. I found a post on a random forum (google search) where someone said that tirerack was the only place you could get them, so I looked it up -- I don't know if that's true, though; I haven't checked with any of the shops like Status or anyone.

The GT3's are a Tire Rack exclusive wheel baded as an SSR wheel - there's some question as to where / who they're actually made by, but if you're looking for the GT3 - tire rack is the place to go :)

^^ thanks Gary -- nothing but good words on this forum about you guys. BTW, does "exclusive" mean they're making it on the cheap and marking it up like 3,000% because of the SSR name? Any negative feedback on the quality of the rims?

yeah -- so weight and torque aren't as big of an issue (although I've got some light n/a mods)

oh wow, GT3's are one of my favs...i think you could pull them off as 20's if you dont mind the extra weight.

i dont think theyd look too bling bling, but youd definitly get some attention.

If you are looking at 19 and 20-inch wheels, obviously performance is not a concern. Go 20-inches.

To be honest I don't know the answer to that question. I know SSR is going around in China and talking to various wheel manufacturers trying to reduce their production costs, but that's about it. I have heard of paint issues with the Tire Rack SSR wheels but that was awhile ago and I would imagine the forged outters they are using is the exact same as the SSR Professor SP1 etc. so you shouldn't have any problems there!

For offsets, you'll want to look in the low 20's for these wheels. SSR / Tire Rack would be able to recommend the optimal offset. One thing to keep in mind when running 20" is that the ride quality is substantially worse than a 19" wheel due to tracking and lower tire profile. But if you're driving on the freeway or in well maintained roads, it should be totally cool. :)

SSF (Semi Solid Forging) is an SSR exclusive process. They are the only wheel manufacturer in the world with SSF manufacturing capability. Are you trying to tell me that Tanabe (New SSR company owner) is casting all their wheels now? Because that would be a lie. The GT3 center is forged and well as the outer barel.

Your going to spend $400 less on the wheels but you will end up paying it back with the more expensive 20" tires. Go 19".

go 20's!! if the circumfrence is the same as stock and they are lightwieght there is no performance lost only traction gained from the wider rear tires! 19" tires are generally more $$ than 20" tires from what I've seen... the trick is to get a little wider tire for the rims which will enhace the sidewall and not compromise the ride as much.

Circumference is dictated by tire size not wheel size. Circumference is not a factor in deciding to get 19" or 20" whels.

What does the wheel diameter have to do with tire width?
