SO-3's on track rays?
 

so, i need to order a new set of tires for my Z and i want a set of S0-3's. But, what sizes are you guys running on the track rays?

I've seen three groupings so far in S-03s on member cars.

STOCK - 225/45/18 (25.9") - 245/45/18 (26.7")
OPTION 2 - 245/40/18 (25.6") - 255/40/18 (26.1")
OPTION 3 - 245/40/18 (25.6") - 255/45/18 (27.0")

How would compare the S-03s to the stock RE040? Is it a similar comparison to S-03s vs the sh1tty stock Michelins on the CL?

Guilty! When did you come over to the Dark Side? ;) The difference between the 040s and S-03s is the same as the difference between the CL's Michelins and the RE730s that I praised so much on the ACL.com board.

I only like the 040s when they have less than 3K miles on them and are heated up to optimum operating temps.

Just came over to the Dark Side last weekend and have no regrets! :)

Based on your comments, I expect I'll be getting S-03s before too long. :cool:

How do you like the tire set up you have? 245/40/18 (25.6") - 255/45/18 (27.0") Dose it handel any better? Are you glad you went with that size? Thanks

Yes they do handle better but honestly I think any tire would handle better than the stock tires. I like the 45's in back for a little more cushion, so to speak, and the 40's up front for the response. I have taken it hard in the twisties on more than one occasion and the tires up front seem to have a tighter feel in the corners. BTW - This setup other than the stock is the only one that I have driven.

One problem I have is that my car has ALOT of understeer and I think that with that cured (with the Nismo S tune as per Raceboy and still wanting to hear more from FairladyZ) that the tires will perform and feel even better.

I am going to wait till the s tune comes to the states, contact my dealer, again, and give them alot more $hit about the porposing and understeer until they give me a great price and cheap install on that s tune along with that factory warranty!!!!!!!!

I have been running 245/40/18 and 275/40/18 on my Rays for about 6 months now.... I like the fat look and they drive without any problems. Yes, before anyone begin, they are larger than recommended, but not by much.

Wizeline, your setup is interesting.

I believe the 245/40-18 up front and 275/40-18 in back are the closest match to the stock tire rolling radius, even though larger than the recommended size for the rims as you indicated. I am still leaning towards getting S-03s in the stock size, but am tempted to do what you did.

Any issues with rubbing front or rear? Is the turning response the same or improved?

I promise you I have never scrubed or had any other problems. I take car of my tires and I am carefull to ensure 35psi in the tire at room tempeture.

The sidewall buldge is minimal and I prefer the extra bit of rubber protecting my rims from curbs (I'll never scub them cause I'm too damn carefull, but it's there in case)

The car drives well, and I have debated this decision with other gear heads to the same conclusion each time...... I think it looks good, and I think it is safe. make damn sure you can tell yourself the same thing when you choose tires. these work well for me, but make sure you are buying what you want (your money right?!?!) and not what some arrogant gear head (like me) thinks you should buy.

The understeer is indeed gone with the S-tune suspension. I have ~3300mi with the suspension (~8200mi on car). The combination of the Nismo wheels with S03's and the S-tune suspension is just awesome. Steering response is remarkably better that stock and the car has a neutral attitude in hard cornering.

I'm not really sure if it was the S03's or the S-tune that got rid of the bounce, but it's gone as well.

In other words - Go for it! You will not be disappointed.

The wheels are 18's all around. 8.5 wide in front and 9.5 in back.

The S03's are 245/40's in front and 275/40's in back.

I also have the Nismo sways on mine. I didn't try it without the sways, but I've been very happy with performance since it was installed. My in-town mileage has gone down somewhat, but I still average 27+ on the freeway.
