some Volks don't fit
Ok..here's a sad tale. A while back I bought a set of Volks TE 37's in silver... (from a guy here)
real nice looking...19" 8.5 front...9.5" rear...with a great deep lip because they had a 12mm offset. looked KILLER, did that lip..the fellow assured me they would fit no problem..so me being an IDIOT. bought them. today i take the car apart, put on my nice new JICs...front rims...oh man it's looking great...back rims..hmm...seems a little tight. yep. they dont fit. they stick out too far. even with the Jics cranked all the way up. rubby rubby. And...since I can't see rolling the fenders on a brand new car... anyways..if anyone wants them they are listed over at the for sale forum. CHEAP. -back on stock wheels. |

sigh...what a frustrating day.
|
on a lighter note..for any of you in the Bay Area, my friend Randys over at
El Cerrito Mitsubishi just got this Hunter specifically to mount over-sized rims. They plan on opening a full on Tuner shop and will happily work on your Z. as you can see in the pix they have a top notch set up. |

nice machine...

thats a seriously agressive offset, with a lowered car, it was definitly a forseeable problem.
rolling the fenders isnt that big of a deal, if you dont mind spending the cash. |
I am an idiot. I took someones word. now i know better!
with my luck the bodyshop would ruin the car. no way I'm rolling the lip. I'll just buy the 'right' offset. if no one wants these rims..well...they will make nice doorstops. live and learn. |
Frank, when you come down to pick up your diffuser, thers a body shop near us who did my fenders for me super cheap, right aorund $80 bucks..and instead of "rolling" them, they actually cut out the fender so there wasnt the chance of the paint chipping...so if you'd like t oget that done when you pick up the diffuser, let me know.

I'm tempted...but I am not going to do it. I'll just eat these rims and buy another set.
you guys got any 9.5 with the right offset down there? I'll buy them off you. |
Frank, we have a set ordered 19x8.5", 19x9.5" with a +22 offset all the way around that the customer might cancel on...they'll be here around mid september, so if he cancels on them, you can grab em...let me know if you're interested.

who was it?
please post the name of the seller that lied to u.
im sure he wont be able to sell anything on here again after that... |
Good to see the JICs went on easily, but sorry about your rim fitment issues. Do you have any closeups of the rear rim on the car? I'm curious to see how little room there was available.
On a side note, I plan on installing my JICs (version 2) Wednesday night. |
the Jics went on smooth as silk, On the rear wheels i ended up with a gap of only about 15 mm between the top of tire and the fender and the outside of the tire was flush with the outside of the wheel well.
for one brief insane moment I considered adding 'helper springs' to RAISE the back of the car another 65mm..but not only would that look stupid, the tires would still have rubbed. as far as 'outing' the guy...I feel it's my own damn fault for not having asked more questions about the whole 'offset' deal. If he reads these posts it would be cool to at least get a 'sorry man'...but whatever.....caveat emptor. |
How's the car ride nevertheless? When you installed the JICs initially, how much was the alignment out of spec?
|
the rid is awesome. I also installedd the swaybars....we measured the car stock, then eyeballed the jics...tput them on...hey where WAY off...so then we used the alignement machine to dial them in. I would say theres no way to dial them in 'by hand' I would definately recommend you do it at a shop. once in no squeek or rattle, a couple of 'settling' creaks was it. The ride is not drastically stiffer...it is still comfy....but a lot, lot 'tighter'. Then again..It is the 'street' springs and not the 'race' springs. i am very happy with this suspension.
one thing tho..the straps for the brake lines/speed sensors are hokey..I am going to get some clamps made. JIC also should include instructions/spec sheet. there where NONE in the box. |

Just roll your fenders. Whats the big deal? No one is going to know but you. I know plenty of people running 10.5 +12 in the rear, granted they have all rolled their fenders. Not sure why rolling your fenders is such a problem.
BTW- I know who you bought these wheels from because he's a good friend of mine and he wasn't trying to burn you. In fact he's running the exact same sizes on his Z that he sold you. Sounds like there was just some miscommunication. I know he feels bad about it because I had lunch with him today and he mentioned the situation. In any case if you don't want to roll your fender I'm sure someone will buy the wheels pretty quickly. |
if I knew some genius bodyshop guy..maybe. but I dont so I am not screwin with the fenders.
I will sell these rims real cheap. unbelievable cheap. or trade them for some 22 or 29 offsets. or maybe toss them of the GG Bridge. Like I said, i am not pissed off at the seller, but myself. he knows that. |
