Chrome the Volk

1 Attachment(s)
My SF Challenge wheel lips have scratches. I want to chrome the entire wheel. The shop tells me that in order to do a proper chrome the wheel has to be disassembled by unscrewing the hexagon screws. Has anybody done this kind of disassembling before? What’s the torque to screw the screws back on? Thanks!

GeauxLadyZ 06-29-2009 05:47 AM

I have no idea, but i want some damn pics of this when accomplished!

zerafian 06-29-2009 05:54 AM

ouch...how did you that that anyways?

These guys all had their volk barrels powdercoated black so Im sure they might know some of the stats you need....DozJr7, 3FIDDYZED, st350z

If the shop wants to take the wheels apart then they will take them apart. Certainly a wheel shop knows how.

Yeah, that's what your paying them to do......lol

Yep they are right about disassembly but better question would be, what is the process in which they want to chrome those wheels? AFAIK Old fashion galvanic chroming might be harmful for the forged wheel structure. Rays RMC finish is done in a very different process.

I'm not sure whether RAYS will advertise the torque spec on those bolts because I'll bet their instruction manual for the wheel says that the wheel is not to be disassembled because then they lose control over the structural integrity of the wheel assembly and therefore cannot back their warranty. With that said, they may give that information to Mackin, and maybe even to various approved vendors (I'm thinking VIP Status and Forged Performance), but who knows. Good luck.

zerafian 06-29-2009 09:02 AM

oh better yet, if you really want to take it apart yourself...jsut call the company and ask.

Chroming the wheels will void the warranty anyways.

Seriously doubt you'll get the torque settings from them. Someone at the wheel shop may know though.

scotts300 06-29-2009 09:22 AM

Call The Tire Rack. They will also strongly suggest you use new hex bolts, at least they have to me before and they should.

Z1 Performance 06-29-2009 01:27 PM

Any shop that is comfortable enough taking them apart should know what hardware to replace it with (Rays doesn't offer the hardware) and will know the appropriate torque specs as well as what process will be safe to use based on the metal they are encountering. If they don't, and leave it up to you to find out, I'd find another place to carry out the work

Chromed SFs look sick

MrToeknee 06-29-2009 02:58 PM

I have actually taken off the face of my old SF Challenges and just tightened it a quarter turn after hand tight. This was about a year ago and the rims are still good til this day.

MrToeknee - did you use a torque wrench? What's the setting? Thanks!

bsurdam 06-29-2009 08:04 PM

ive had to get my gts faces taken off and painted so its not that hard. kept the same hex bolts and zero problems cant remember the torque setting though. if you pm and reputable wheel vendor on here im sure they would know. pm status he knows the setting. its fairly simple and easy.

Rays will not give out specs. I have also heard that the chrome process can hurt the integrity of the wheel. And I heard from a local member that he tightened his back to the low 30's after some powder coating.
