What wheels to get...

OK, so I know it is all personal preference, but there is so much stuff going on about wheels that I am asking for some assistance.

I have the Lemans Sunset Roadster with stock 17" wheels. I want nicer wheels, I like the 5, 6 or 7 spoke designs the best. I only drive for pleasure (daily drives are in my pickup), I am too old to be a rice racer (ie. street dude with 5" exhausts and an airplane wing for a spoiler), I want wheels that are fairly strong (some rough roads in this area). My tire preference for no reason except I think they are good are Michelin Pilots.

Looks are therefore the main reason, although I like the ride I have now so I don't want to stiffen the ride TOO much. So should I go 18" or 19"? Silver or gunmetal? Is it worth the extra money to get forged? Should I look at other tires?

I will also be ordering the complete set (wheels and tires mounted and balanced) as I live far away from any tire jockeys I trust.

So I am open to suggestions and any advice. Somewhere along the line I will make up my mind but I'm sure your inputs will help me make the decision.

Thanks! John

Volks and Toyos...improved the looks and the ride.

I'd say.... HRE or Works, or Volks... you will search tons of pictures if you just search a little around. There is even a gallery for all the rims and stuff in this site...check out the top threads in wheel/suspension forum (where you posted this forum :))

BBS LM's.

One thing that I have found out on this site, if you don't get Volk, Works, iForged, etc. you get 0 respect and are looked down on. Good luck buying your way into the inner circle...

I like the 18" Nismo LMGT4s. Made by Rays and they are forged. IMO, 18" is the proper size for our cars. 8.5" front and 9.5" rear. If you want a deal from a Nissan Dealer, PM me.

I tend to disagree with this statment. Of course, there are some loud-mouth-know-it-alls that will disparage other brands of wheels, but in general, I think most people are pretty respectful of everyone's choices. With over 20,000 memebers on this site, there are going to be some ***holes on here.

Why don't you give us your budget, and then maybe we can help you chose some good wheels that fit within it.

:)

My thoughts exactly.

BS, what kind of garbage is that?!?!

I have seen some ADRs that look great for the $, the 5Zigan Hyper5 looks good, Axis, and there are a few others. Infact, I like to look at different wheels so much I come here everday just to see different looking wheels on Zs and I am not even in the market for more wheels.

Ditto. That remark is out of line.

John,

When I was shopping for wheels, I spent some time in the Wheel Gallery section of this site. There are some great pictures of wheels on Z's off all colors. It really helps make the decision easier.

If money is an issue, I like the ADR's. I have seen them for about $2000 for 19inchers with tires. I think they look terrific. If money is not as big an issue, there are lots of choices in the $3000-$4000 range, including Volk. As mentioned, the wheel gallery is a great place to start.

You can get 5Zigen FN01R-C 18X8.5, 18X9.5 with tires for around $1600. These wheels are pretty light and the offsets are right.

If you have any questions on Volk, Racing hart, Maya, or Lowenhart let me know. I also have a very intensive gallery.

Moroccan_Mole 01-28-2004 01:13 PM

well ... what is your budget?

i think if i bought another set of wheels it would be ssr professors or advan model 5's.

J Ritt 02-02-2004 09:35 PM

You absolutely have to start with a budget and some goals in mind...just like doing any sort of mod. Are you after looks, performance, light weight, strength, certain color, certain finish? What size tires do you plan on running? You don't want to buy skinny little wheels, and then try to cram some 295's on them when you realize you don't have enough grip. Are you planning on a big brake upgrade? If so, plan on having some spoke clearance. Do you plan on using them on the track? Make sure they are strong enough to hit curbs. Can they withstand a pothole impact? Is this even a concern where you live. Will they corrode? Will you drive in salt and snow? Will you be swapping tires frequently? If so, you might not want a big beautiful polished flat lip? Decide what you're after, look at the gallery, and think about how you will use them. Tire choice varies greatly depending on size. There are more 17" tire choices in race rubber, and in street rubber...they're also much cheaper than a 19" tire. You can also run thicker sidewalls if you drive on rough roads. How much offset do you need? Will you be lowering the car? If so, make sure you have enough inboard clearance for your suspension. Tons of stuff to think about. Take your time, and don't let people pressure you. There are lots of good wheels out there in various price ranges...from $100 per wheel to $1000 per wheel. Good luck!

Axis Hiros are sweet, and reasoably priced too. I think that is what I am going with. About $2000 with tires.

ranger5oh 02-03-2004 07:54 AM

And btw... if you can afford it, Forged is worth every penny.
