Default if i buy an 06....

how do i know if its an oil burner? more than likely the seller isnt gonna say.
what is the extent of the "oil cunsumption" that i read so much about? is it a hit or miss? at what point (milage) would it be deemed good? is it a matter of keeping up on maintenance? or does it eat 1 qt for 1k miles?

You don't know if it's an oil burner. The seller may honestly not know either. There are likely a lot more oil burners than have been reported because owners simply don't know since the local Jiffy Lube isn't measuring the amount of oil that comes out of the pan nor checking the dipstick after the car has cooled down for 10 minutes.

Lots of info out there on this. Honestly, start searching and reading a lot.

How many miles are on the 06'?

best bet is to do a bit of testing on your own. keep track of oil in vs oil out for a length of time.

My 06 doesn't seem to have the issue either. I check every once in a while in between oil changes and don't see any oil levels dipping.

Not all '06s got the problem, but try to get an '04.5, '05 or '07, just to be on the safe side. IF you decide to go for the '06 anyway, just do more-often oil checks. Good luck.

When do you check it? After driving, idling, cold?

This is absolutely right. An 06 is not worth the risk. Nothing worse than loosing the car of your dreams because the engine is FUKD! Unfortunately, I know from experience.

I know all about the potential oil consumption issues, but my question is exactly how is it ruining the engine? I doubt the cars are burning through oil so fast that routine checks wouldn't identify it is low. Are the owners who lost their engine never looking at their oil levels until the engine locks up because their is no more oil?

^1 I came from an RX7. We had to fill up with oil almost as often as filling up with gas (and even then we added 2 stroke to the gas). My '06 isn't burning oil. Even so, I periodically check the oil level between changes. Even if I were to burn a qt of oil over 3k miles, that isn't going to destroy an engine. Now, if I never checked it, and didn't do an oil change every 3k miles or so, then I can see there might be a problem.

My 06 has about 44000 miles and I have had no issues with it whatsoever.

If I were you though, I'd just go with an 07, get the HR engine and be safe.
