Lightbulb the Z's signature sound

I was just wondering if anyone knows exactly what gives the 350z its signature sound. the VQ35 in the G35 and the Z have an almost space-ship like exotic sound....personally.. like nothing ive ever heard before....and it is beautiful.. soo soo beautiful...

on a similar note... what is it that gives all motors a particular sound... atleast i know i can pick out a mustang b/w a camaro or any other muscle car...w/out seeing it and im sure others can too....

A mix. of parts. An air intake can change the sound, so can the exhaust system. It's a plethora of different things that create the distinct sound you are talking about.

The Z has more of an engine sound than an exhaust sound.

Exhaust sounds are what you hear from the typical ricer cars. You can tell that the car isn't really powerful and they just have a muffler to make it sound more like it is.

The Z and other sports cars, well, it doesn't matter what type of exhaust you use, you listen to the sound and you can hear power in it.

The sound of an engine is as carefully engineered as the look of a car and it's not cooincedence that the best engines sound oh so sweet.

It's the exhaust sound. Stand on a busy street corner and listen, whenever a Z, G or FX goes by you can easily tell. I don't notice the sound that much on the approach but it's obvious as they drive away - has to be the exhaust.

It's the sound of a 3.5 liter + VQ baffled through various pipes and an exhaust. Even the G35 and Z sound a little different because of the piping. G's are more drawn and monotone while the Z is pitched and gurgles.

Try putting the exhaust from a 350z on like a random N/A four banger. I doubt it'll sound the same at all. The exhaust has alot to do with it but the engine gives it that distinct howl and gurgle. The exhaust just muffles it, keeps the volume at an appropriate decibel.

If you listen to say, the Nismo, Borla or Greddy exhausts it's almost the same note, just amplified depending on how much airflow the pipes will allow the sound to be heard.

I dont no what makes the sound, whether its the exhaust alone, the engine or the combo of both. I still love it!

Typically, the engine has its own unique sound, and the exhaust simply *gasp* muffles it by varying degrees. As someone else said, an upgraded exhaust will sound similar, just louder.

The G35 sedan and the coupe sound worlds apart even though they have the exact same engine.

I'll admit it - when I first heard it, I didn't like it.

Then as I grew to appreciate the car in all forms and began to seriously consider purchasing one, I heard it in a "new light" so to speak. Now, I hear it and my neck snaps to see whats driving by.

I think the exhaust tone is, like said, the result of several things. Headers can even change the exhaust note. It is a single pipe cat-back exhaust, but it does have dual-cats. The OEM twin-tip exhaust, if I'm not mistaken, is made by Fujitsibo, which I'm sure accounts for part of the reason it sounds so good.

They're tuned completely differently.

Two different exhaust setups. I've seen the coupes with dual tips like the Z has on both sides. The sedans have a single exhaust consisting of two small pipes on the drivers side only.
