Exactly, The point of the 2nd gear and e-brake is to have much resistance for the clutch to overcome. That means that if the clutch is good and grips, the engine stalls. If the clutch is shot, it will slip, and the engine will not stall. But you only do that when you want to test the condition your clutch is in.

Ok....I stopped...put the car in second..pulled the ebrake but not to much...the car took off like if i was in first...even with the ebrake on. The second and third time i pulled the ebrake hard...and the car stalled completely both times...Than i put the car in third gear...tried to take off and it took off. Does that sound good to you?

Correct. When the clutch is fully depressed, there is no connection between the engine and the transmission.

haha i really should not be driving a 6 speed.. nah actually i am a pretty good driver, i still just dont know all the fundamentals of the manual transmission yet.. Only been doin it now for about 8 months.. :)

Yes. If the car stalled, that means that the clutch is not slipping, which is good. :icon38:

Ayankees2772 05-23-2006 11:37 PM

Yea the first time i tried it...i didnt pull the ebrake hard bc i was scared...and the car started pulling and driving normal even with the ebrake on...that means my clutch is actually strong right? and why isnt it good to do this test to much?

Ayankees2772 05-23-2006 11:38 PM

Oh and the time i tried taking off in third...i took the ebrake off...does this also mean my clutch is strong if it took off from zero in third?

no you want it to STALL, that means your clutch is good cause its gripping..

Yes, but the problem is, to start in 3rd from rest, you need to slip the clutch more than you would for other gears. So it's not very good for your clutch to do that.

Ayankees2772 05-23-2006 11:44 PM

The first time i tried it...i only had the ebrake pulled about 75%...the car took off as if i was in first with no ebrake...im assuming thats good right? the other two times i pulled the ebrake 100% and the car stalled right away...Thats means im good right?

Ayankees2772 05-23-2006 11:45 PM

damn didnt know it wasnt good to start in third...But since it did catch and drive...that also the sign of a strong clutch?

Yes.

You don't want to do this test too often because between the time when you release the clutch with the e-brake engaged and when the engine stalls, the clutch gets all the stress. It's not catastrophical to do this test, it's just pointless. It's something I do when I'm looking to buy a used car, and I'll do it once.

3hree5ive0ero 05-23-2006 11:47 PM

to put it simply, you will know when the clutch starts to go bad, as it'll begin to slip on you

slip..meaning release the clutch slower?

dump.. meaning let it out quick??

:D

3hree5ive0ero 05-23-2006 11:48 PM

in that case yes..

3hree5ive0ero 05-23-2006 11:51 PM

this is just my personal opinion, but I think it's better if you guys learn about manual transmissions and practice on cheap manual cars before you actually own a manual transmission car.. that way you don't make stupid mistakes..

Ayankees2772 05-23-2006 11:52 PM

Manu check your pm

Ayankees2772 05-23-2006 11:53 PM

Well i did practice on cheaper cars..But since the Z has a 100% different engagement point and the clutch is so stiff...It was like learning all over. Thanks for everyones help! Its so good to actually have a ? answered, instead of people saying needless things like SEARCH....
