Why Z's & road curbs don't get along...

Hey fellow Z fans,
Well, this past week I was "hot dogging-it" with a buddy in the car. I pulled out of a parking lot pretty hard and floored it into second. I had checked to make sure that there were absolutely no cars and no cops around so I thought I was safe...well....I didn't think about how much of an effect the cold weather would have on my tires and their grip. Going into second the rear of my Z broke loose and started to fishtail severely. I tried correcting but after a couple of fishtails my front tires broke loose (even though I was only going about 35-40 mph). Now, I've been in a few fishtailing situations or power-slides and I'm pretty comfortable in those situations (especially when they're on purpose) but this took me by complete suprise. Realizing that I was not "in control" I applied my brakes only to discover my Z skipping from the left lane, into the right lane and at about 10 mph my passenger side rear wheel whipped into the curb.

I just about cried when I heard it hit. And yes, driving over to a nearby gas station to inspect the damage to my Volks I felt the "wobble." It's now at the Nissan dealer, insurance is going to pay for the parts and the fixing of my two right wheels. The damage? I broke the upper radius rod, lower control arm, and the wheel hub bearing. I've posted pics of the incident. The fix is only about two days of downtime, but the wheel chroming repair has to be sent to California for a 4-6 week turnaround. I'm looking at just getting a couple of cheap wheels to drive on in the mean time. Apparently you don't want to hit curbs with your Z, HAHA!! Oh, I am so upset with myself...:icon16:

I don't even know what hot dogging is.

You started to lose it so you hit the brakes?

Good job.

No point in lecturing you for hot-dogging. Best of luck with the fix.

Agreed.... it wouldn't solve anything and the only way to really learn is to do it yourself and practice in the real world and learn from mistakes like these....

If it's any consolation.... I kinda feel worse about his taillights than his wheel.... :icon43:

Russ@Z1 Dec 10, 2006 01:05 PM

looks like the tire is on backwards anyway.

mr. sparco Dec 10, 2006 01:08 PM
