How can I afford mods when I'm dropping $800 a week into little crappy repairs!?!

So Tuesday the car craps out in traffic...

https://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/326690-car-stuck-in-idle-won-t-rev-at-all.html

Today the passenger window stops working. $325 for a throttle body and now $470 for a passenger window motor (and if the regulator's bad it's another $329)!!

I'm hoping this is the end of the crap because one more $300+ repair this month and I'm never buying another Nissan again!

Okay. So it's a rant. Maybe I'm just unlucky. Maybe I should have bought the extended warranty. I bought it used from a dealer (1 owner, 23,000mi) but should an 04 be doing this? I thought these things had a better rep than this. I thought for SURE any repairs I'd need to have done wouldn't total what the extended warranty costs, but it looks like I'll max out at way more than that in under a year. :icon22:

Warning: Never let your warranty expire, even if it costs you $$$, buy the extended warranty!

youre getting hosed by the dealership.

470 for a window motor? try 190 from performance nissan
329 for a regulator? try 65 from performance nissan

goto mynismo.com and click the FACTORY PARTS button in the left side of the screen. go from there to buy your parts.

and for the window, its probably the regulator and not the motor.

my regulator on my power window went out too. (03 touring)

I think its a common thing for windows that seal like the z. Regulator goes out, shorts the motor, and now you have two items broken.

Thats good news. I need two regulators....Dealer qouted $250 each.

So how can I diagnose whether it's the regulator or not?

my05350z Jan 11, 2008 09:19 AM

i'm just guessing, but those prices include labor right? I got my extended warranty from another automaker for half the price of nissans warranty. Same bumper to bumper extended. Just hit 36000 this week too.

Take off the door panel and look. I doubt it's the regulator.

Thanks for the heads-up on the mynismo.com parts prices. I'd be happy to tackle this repair myself. - May good 'carma' follow you always. :icon38:

Maybe you need a budget. Put aside $100 or $200/month for repairs. That way when you need the money you will have it.

Please dont tell me they replaced your throttle body over "broken gears" ? :icon14: Why would your TB need replacing?

They claim it was a sensor in the throttle body that wasn't serviceable and had to replace the whole thing.

Here's the thread:
https://my350z.com/forum/showthread.php?t=326690

Initially the codes that the computer was indicating were crankshaft position sensor plus a few others. The local Nissan dealer had to connect to Nissan tech HQ to get the proper diagnosis and the TB was replaced.

Thats a little steep for a window motor. If anything, I'd just go to the nearest junkyard and take out a motor from a wrecked Z. Install it yourself and you just saved yourself a couple hundred bucks.

I could see that going bad..
"Is it under warranty?" "No" "It's the TB, replace"
"Is it under warranty?" "Yes" "Reset TPS"

Oh well, atleast you're up and running. The window motors aren't that big of a deal, the TB does happen. It's just a way of life.

Mod on!

That price was with labor. For just the motor they want $190 from Performance (CA), $204 from Courtesy (TX), and $240 locally in FL. Since I want to do it tomorrow, and overnite shipping is $40 I'll just buy it here. :dunno:

USMC-Z Jan 11, 2008 11:32 AM

Thats more like it. I was about to say, 470...what a rip! You sure that you don't want to install the motor yourself? I've taken apart the door panel to install speakers and it didn't look that difficult to install the motor at home. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah. Think I'm gonna try. I spotted a motor reset procedure over at the tech site. I'd still like some info if there's a DIY or instructions anywhere out there...

I only paid 120 for the throttle body, the dealer is doing you dirty

The 320 was with labor and all the computer diagnosis. I have SOME tools and SOME ability to work on my car but I don't have access to the computer to read the Check Engine codes and I didn't have the time to work on the car myself even if I could have figured out that it was the TB.

On the other hand, replacing a window motor should be within my grasp (though I'm just a weekend car hacker and bow to the many mechanics and modders on this forum). I'm sure it's gonna take me much longer than most of the people on my350z.com.

There's plenty of info on the forums..just be patient, diagnose the issue and take a stab at trying to fix it..you might be pleasantly suprised.
