M/T question

I haven't gotten a chance to test drive a m/t Z yet, but I was wondering how it compared to driving any other manual trans car. Is it like any other manual? Is the clutch grabby, etc.

Clutch is a little stiff, the engagement point is really high, and yes it is a bit grabby.

However, it is a blast to drive. Gearbox has a short-throw shifter and it shifts pretty smoothly.

Hope that helps.

What have you driven?

davidv 08-18-2009 06:18 PM

Its like other manual transmission vehicles but its different.

SirSpeedyZ 08-18-2009 06:26 PM

come on over and drive mine

TreeFiddyZee 08-18-2009 06:29 PM

Killed mine on the test drive. :o Been driving clutches for 30 years. You do the math.

The clutch engagement point is a lot higher than most cars. Its also quite stiff compared to not sports cars.

manual on 350z is crazy yo!

Manjot 08-18-2009 07:43 PM

clutch doesnt engage until you let off pretty high

I drove a 2000 a4 before the Z, and the clutch felt pretty similar. Its definitely tight and 1st to 2nd takes a little getting used to. I don't feel like its all that demanding..

haha I like that:icon18:

The 6sp on my 06 feels solid and the high engagement is easy to get used to. I just love everything about these cars, all around tight!

After driving cars with soft clutches ever since I got my first car.... The Z definitelly took me a while to get use to especially its stiff clutch and very high engagement point. Just practice everyday..and pretty soon you will get use to it and you will never regret buying a Z ;)

vthao 08-18-2009 09:15 PM

It's the same as every other cars.

CK9887 08-18-2009 09:59 PM

Just like any other manual car, it just takes a few minutes to get used to and then it feels normal....

After driving V8's for several years, the Z's clutch definately feels soft.

when ever I drive like honda civics i stalled due to being used to my Z high clutch engagement point

Ok out of cars like the M3, RX8, and Stang GT, they are all more forgiving. Z is harder and when you screw it, it does a great job of letting you know. GT for example is very forgiving and Z is jumpy. Fun car to drive, very fun, but it takes a little to get used to. Even M3 is forgiving...until you put sport mode on. Then all is lost! :P

Is there a reason for the clutch travel being so long?

Pontiac Grand Am, Ford Ranger, work trucks. It's been about 10yrs though.

It really isn't anything to lose sleep over. Just like anything else, it takes practice and getting used to.
