It's Killing Me ----Damn Break In

How do you get through the break in period w/o going above 4,000 RPM's?????............It's killing me.

:icon11:

I have had my Z for a week and put 450 miles on it. I drive it as much as possible but at this rate it will be 3 more weeks before I can get on it.

I have had to roll down my window twice. Once to a Mustang GT and another to a RX8 (car I traded for the Z) and tell them I am still breaking in........one was cool about it, the other said "yea, whatever".

On the plus side, I am getting 22.5 mpg.

When I hit the 1,200 mile mark, I am treating myself to a popcharger and Crawford Plenum.!!!!!!

I can't wait!!!!

HAHA! You should've bought used. :icon18:

chaze Apr 11, 2004 03:24 PM

I hear it, supposably it's not that big of a deal anymore but better safe then sorry.

DiRN Apr 11, 2004 03:27 PM

Yeah, a lot of dealers say you don't need to do it anymore. But doing it certainly won't hurt the engine.

..and if it's taking you too long, you just don't drive it enough. So get off the computer and go drive!

SHO-TIME Apr 11, 2004 03:31 PM

Just drive alot.... make sure you don't stay at the same speed for too long either. Local street driving is better than fwy drives... have fun! :D

FYI. My first canyon run was before I broke my car in.... so go figure. :D:D:D

Sorry for the double post, but I accidentally hit the "submit" button.

Anyway, mplc,
Don't feel bad - I've had mine for 4 weeks and only have 800 miles on mine. However, I'm only getting about 19-20 mpg.

As far as the 4,000 rpm thing goes, my salesman also told me that you could go drive it like you stole it right off the lot, but I figured salesmen don't know crap - so I am trying to observe the "proper" break-in process. But it's not a perfect world and I once had mine up to 5,000 rpm and once up to 4,500 rpm when getting out into traffic. Quite a few times (6-12), I was unable to get the accelerator / clutch timing right and it spun up to about 4,200 rpm (the Z's clutch take-up point is very different than my former S2000's). I imagine that the car will live through such wanton abuse, though.

It took me weeks to hit 1,200. Then later I put 1,200 on mine in one day (21 hours of driving down the west coast). :)

If you need help getting tot he end of the break in period, let me know, I'll be more than willing to drive your Z those extra miles. Haha. :D

I feel your pain... I'm at 900 miles after a week and a half.

R.J._Vancouver Apr 11, 2004 11:30 PM

I here ya. Just broke mine in this weekend :-) Although here, it`s 2000 Kilometers. To remind myself, I programmed my shift light to come on at 3500 RPM. Kinda helped.

LOL took me and my dad a week to get those 1,200 miles, currently has about 2,000 miles and we have now had it for 2 weeks, hehe its hella fun after that break in and u get it up to 6000 RPM for the first time

35oZephyR Apr 11, 2004 11:39 PM

"yea, whatever". <~~~~ was this from the RX-8 guy??
Cuz you could have probably dusted him while keeping it under 4k!

I'm just kiddin! :p

Be patient my friend...it only gets better. When I first got my Z I treated the break in period like foreplay. Once you pass that mark and go at it...it's so rewarding. Don't forget to change your oil too. I changed mines for the first time the other day and the PSI dropped quicker than before allowing the engine to rev smoother and exhaust note to be crisp (as oppose to bubbly).

Have fun! ;)

35oZephyR Is huntington beach too far for a relationship?

I get no love :(

Just reached break-in this weekend. Believe me, it's worth the wait. Biggest surprise is that, yes, it's quick as hell, but it's the handling that just blows me away.

I didn't realize the handling was that impressive at first until I noticed I was taking the same turns in the Z 50-100% faster then I would have in my GSR with less body roll and more grip. Yes, those numbers are accurate and the GSR was no slouch in the handling department. Simply amazing.

Car will get faster with more miles. 1200miles ran a bit sluggish for me. When I got to around 5k, things felt better all around
