Can't Get The Z Right Now, What Do I Do??
 

I'm 17, and my parents are tripping over me getting the Z since its a 2 seater and they feel that its useless to the family even though I'm paying for it. In order to get my parents help, I need to get a car with a backseat. I currently have the #1 spot on the waiting list at a dealer here in LA. Should I sell my spot? No flames, but i would really appreciate some ideas and suggestions. BTW, I will be getting the Z as soon as I can on my own, so I just have to wait a little longer for my 350ZR. :D

Edit: If people could also suggest some ideas for a car, that would be cool.

Another thing, could someone explain if an open end lease would be a good idea for the Z. How does it work? Insurance prices? Value of the car?

First, forget the Z, worry about college.

But, if you've got the money and need a car, why not take a look at a low mi. NA supra or 300zx? (if you're thinking TT, first get an insurance quote for 17 year old).

Or, if you def. want new and similar to the Z, many mags. have called the G35 coupe a de facto 350z 2+2.

get a g35 coupe.

Damn it! I was starting to forget about the Z for like a day after going to the dealer and finding a TT Coupe for really cheap. Now I saw a Nissan commercial while watching MD's and wow. I think I should get an inexpensive 300ZX 2+2 5spd to practice and just wait till I turn 18 and prove my parents wrong. Suggestions?

I agree with Mikey above...buying the car is half the battle for a 17yr old. Insurance will, in most cases, drop your jaw like no other.

If I place myself as they primary driver, which I'm not, is over $4000 per year. So I'll be under another car, my dad as the primary on the Z, but I'll be the one who drives it 49% of the time ;)

It may be tough to find a 2+2, but it wouldn't be a bad alternative for a while. Or you could get an IS 300, I'd love to be 17 with one of those...

Well then try an old 240Z.

They are available in fairly nice condition ranging from $1000 on up, Insurance is not unbearable, depending upon your necessity level of toys and high performance doo-dads, and you could learn mechanical skills by maintaining it.

When the 350Z of your dreams comes along for you, Jump it, but keep the old Z, you'll fall in love with the original.

I am SO glad I don't have a car that a teenager is going to pull up next to me in...

Hey...I'm still a teenager (tho not for much longer, turning 20 soon:(). I think people my age get a bad rep from the whole "ricing" scene or whatever you want to call it. The truth is, there are many 18-early 20's people who know a s***load about cars. A guy here at VT did his own intercooler piping by hand with a mandrel (sp?) bender for his 1st gen DSM. Some other guys just did an engine swap for a 240sx.

I admit tho, there are way too many unknowledable "Fast and Furious" teenagers out there. Tons of them here at Tech. But there are also those of us who cringe every time we see clear taillights, glowing washer nozzles, and huge wings.

Come to one of our car meets. Only about 3% of the people there would be termed ricers. The rest are ordinary car enthusiasts. You will actually be hard pressed to find a Civic or Accord anywhere in the lot.

By the time I get my Z I'll be 20, so those of you who are against teenagers won't have to worry about that:icon04: :icon4: :icon04:

Dude get a used IS300, very cool looking, fun, and fast (as long as you don't armor all the whole tire). Plus used one for like 21K

whats wrong with that? i am 16 and i have just saved up enough money and then some to pay for the Z. although i wouldnt be the main driver, it is totally earned by me. i think if anyone who actually made their money to buy their own cars no matter the age, should be given respect also.

Exactly, but I'm f*****n tired of people always saying the same thing. Teenagers get no respect, but I dont care, I just ingore the ignorant. BTW, its 2002, not 1975, teenagers could drive nice cars like the rest of you "old" people.

240Z or 300 zx 2+2 are good way to go...even a supra...but whatever you buy just have fun with it

that's just were you live, i'll put money that there will be plenty in my area. Remember here kids get everything from IS300's, to s2k's, to hummers when they turn either 16 or 17, and yup daddy bought everyone one of them. Pretty crazy huh? I hope to be one day a father who can afford to give his kid an Is300 or something nice to that extent. I want to make sure my I make enough money that my childrens grand kids iwll be set for life :D

for the record i find it completely ok for parents to get kids their cars, and congradulate those of you who are so lucky and commend you that are paying for it yourself, that's something I could've never pulled off when I was 16. Teens just keep getting better and better, I remember when I was 16 it was hard enough to hold down a pleathora of clubs and sports and such but it's eally somethign seeing teens hold down these huge jobs this yr and get A's and do all the other stuff on top of it. Major props daytona350 and the rest of you that are paying for your own. That's awesome!

I would say why don't you buy a cheap used car, practice for about 6 months, then buy a new one. The more you drive , The more skills you gain. And if you had a cheap car, you wouldn't think about the possibilty of getting your car wrecked . and By that way , You will have the enough skills to maintain your Future Z from accidents. Morover, your brain will think much more faster in finding away to prevent an accident, espeacilly when you in a case where split of seconds decisions may save your life and you car, and believe me that skill will help you A LOT.

for the young guys on here .. the ones going to hs and planning on getting / who have a Z .. arent you worried about people jacking your car in the lots and when your out and about.

im finishing up my last year in college and am worried about the car when i leave it in a secured garage with camera's and security guards .. i cant imagine leaving this car in my hs parking lot for a bunch of hs dropouts to come by and scratch up and jack it up.

Only now that I have a nice car can i appreciate having a old beater during all my days in hs and beginning of college .. nothing brings peace of mind like a old beater. but whatever the case, be careful out there and drive safely.
