It reminded me of a shark of sorts -- the tail lights look like crecents or 'boomerangs'. It was 330+ HP, 200lbs lighter than the 350Z, and they are targeting a 30,000-32,000 base MSRP.

The front looked slightly more aggressive with a wider and more pronounced 'scoop'. The rear bumper had a distinctive look and feel to it, with the exaust pipes looking more pronounced (and larger).

The left side gauge was digital and performed multiple tasks, and was able to display other things -- this was in ADDITION to the center left gauge.

Redline was pushed back but they wouldnt tell us how far.

Cargo room was decreased slightly.

The rear sway bar cover was slightly slimmer.

The headlights had a very distinctive look to them

I was assured the images I saw were photos, and not renders. I could tell they were real.

I did not sign an NDA but we were not allowed to bring in cameras or cell phones, there were 6 of us chosen to be part of the focus group, all Z owners.
And is this a 2008 or 2009 model your focus group was viewing?

Well, not that my word is any better than Proteus, but I was very lucky to see an early clay-only prototype and the mention of 'boomerang' taillights confirms that 1) Proteus is probably telling the truth and 2) the one part I didn't like about the prototype is likely to make it to production.

Question: Does the version you saw have a side vent?

So it is possible that this z might show up at the Tokyo motor show next month. Wouldn't that be a surprise.

Was the clay model downsized or was it the actual size?

Who knows? If Proteus is to be believed, he has seen more than me (there was no interior when I saw it) so it looks like they are making progress.

The whole 30K price point thing is pretty disappointing though. Chalk it up to inflation I guess.

-- The models (2 different studies actually) I saw were actual size, painted, and had mockup plastic headlights and tail-lights. It had exhaust tips, and rims. I actually liked the one that didn't make the cut a lot more, but it didn't exude the "Z-ness" that this upcoming one does.

the design studio is in california, I pay particular attention to this as I am also a automotive design student

there is some believability in this possibility as most design studios are in southern california, near your Irvine location; namely in strong relation to those that attend Art Center of Pasadena--one of the top 3 car design schools in the world among schools like Coventry or Turin Design in Europe.

I have an acquaintance who is very close to the project. At the time the La Jolla design just beat out the Japanese version of the 370. I just want to add that the person designing this vehicle is a huge Z enthusiast who has owned many generations of the Z-Car and his work really shows off his understanding of Z "DNA".

I don't think I would want to undermine him, his work, or Nissan by publishing a drawing although I have drawn it -- albeit poorly -- for Mr B (another member here). I guess this doesn't help anyone in terms of info... but I actually posted about this nearly a year ago but my thread was mysteriously removed. In that thread I mentioned the following: Same overall profile but slightly more curves more accents around the exhaust area. I was thinking mentioning the boomerang tail-lamps may have been too much info. But since it is public now... Also, I can confirm the larger front air dam. Ok, enough info. We wait for Tokyo 07 (or 08).
