Default one 10w7 or two 10w6v2's

I am ordering my subs in the next few days but before I do I wanted some opinions. I was going to order one 10w7 but now I'm am not sure if I should order two 10w6v2's instead. I already have a 2000watt mono class D amp so thats not a problem and I am going to put them in a custom enclosure under the strut bar. I was just wondering everyones opinion. Thanks

Your amp would destroy either choice. Especially considering the recommended power for the 10W7 is between 500 - 700 watts. I would say 2 10W6's because they can handle 500 watts each but you still have too much amp for those speakers.

I could just turn down the amps power to the recommended levels right? And if so then which subs would you choose? Thanks

I actually have one 10w7-3 being push with a JL Audio 1000/1 and it is taking it very well. I had two in the Z at one point, but could not stand that much bass. It was destroying my car. Literally! I snapped the rod that support my rearvied mirror in have. Luckily I am good friends with the service manager at my local dealership. He replaced it with one out of a Titan truck with the compass and temperature display.

As for which I would go for, I would say a single 10w7-3 in a vented enclosure would produce slightly more SPL than a pair of 10w6v2's. The reason I say this is because I have heard it. I also have another friend who was running 2 12w6v2's and ended up moving on to a single 12w7 in a vented enclosure.

What amp are you talking about? You not actually turning down an amps power by turning the gains down. You are just reducing the input sensitivity, which in turn reduces the amount of voltage going to the driver.

Thanks for the reply but what does the -3 mean after the 10w7. Also what does SPL stand for and why a vented enclosure versus a sealed one. Sorry if these are dumb questions but I think I am ordering it tomorrow and I just want to make sure I make the right choice. Thanks

If i could change one thing about my system i would say I wish i had a ported box for my 10W7 but i had some strict requirements on the design

done12many2,
Was this in a Z with 2 12W6V2's?

That's weird because bass is all about how much air you can get flowing and 2 12W6's would produce more air that 1 12W7. For example, when I had my altima i had 2 10W6V2's, my buddy had 3 10W6v2's and his was way louder than mine, we both had the same amp. I even did a ported box but he still had me and it made me so angry i couldn't stand it.

As far as the w7 line is concerned, there is very little audible difference between vented and sealed as far as sound quality. Vented will allow you to produce more sound at a given power input than sealed. Generally speaking, you will yield a 3 db gain at the same given input than sealed. Running two drivers instead of one, in theory will also net you the same 3 db gain, provided you are using the same type enclosure. With that in mind, a single vented enclosure will produce the same gain as two drivers in a sealed enclosure.

Most people think that the w7 is JL's SPL driver, but it was actually intended for sound quality. It just so happens that with the massive motor structure that the w7 line has, it is capable of outstanding SPL levels as well.

SPL stands for Sound Pressure Level. Kinda like volume level but it is the actually measurement of the pressure level within the vehicle produced by the sound.

No way he got two 12's in a Z. Sorry about that. Should have clarified. They are in the hatch of his 97 Supra. Etremely nice setup, but he has since moved on to a single 12w7, which I am doing in the very very near future.

The db gain rule applies to what your buddy and you had running. He had 3 drivers and you had 2. He would have produced more SPL than you by the sum of 2 to 3 db's. However, if his 3 were sealed and you vented your 2, you would be equal or louder with the same amount of power. No don't read this as exact, because a lot of parameters play into this. One huge one is the vehicle itself. Let face it. Cetain setups in one vehicle may sound decent, but in another, may sound fantastic.

To add to my last. It is not necessarily the volume of the enclosure by itself that controls SPL, but more importantly the sum of the surface area of all drivers used. 2 10's will have more surface are than 1 15. This is why each time you double the amount of drivers, you generally gain 3 db's.

the 3 after 10w7-3 means it is a 3ohm voice coil.

I was running 2 10w6v2 is a slot enclosure, a lot louder than my 3 10w6v2 sealed.

I'd rather have 2 w6v2 slot ported as oppose to a w7. I 2nd the w7 has more SPL than 2 w6v2s. I just favor the w6v2 models.

I have another question I have heard that vented enclosures are more for rap is that true? The enclosure is going to be custom made so I need to figure out which way I want it made. And thanks for all the replies so far.

Vented/ported enclosures are more "boomy" as opposed to sealed that is clean and *toight, like a tiger* in my Goldmember voice.

The truth is that a vented enclosure is tighter because the driver can respond faster, and a sealed enlcosure can get deeper in sound. Most think that a vented/ported enclosure is deeper because it is louder, but the truth is that a sealed enclosure can get deeper in bass, but is generally not as loud. So some may confuse loud for more "boomy". Depending on what you call "boomy" is what will determine whether or not a sealed or vented enclosure is for you. When dealing with most subwoofers, sealed is the best for overall frequency response, but with the JL subs, I prefer vented, since what is gained in SPL, far outweighs the tiny portion lost in SQL. SQL = Sound Quality

Ok so I think I am ordering the W7 but now I am wondering if I should get two or is one enough. I also think I am going to do a sealed box because I listen to some rap and techno but mostly rock and I have heard that sealed is best for rock. Let me know your opinions please.

Agreed

With 500 watts it's pretty nuts
