I need a 10" Subwoofer Recommendation

I copied this from a car audio forum I posted this on first...

Hello everyone, I am new here and new to car audio. I am currently building a stereo system for my project car and I have run into a bit of an issue. I want to create a sound system with what I know to be some of the best product on the market and I want to focus mainly on sound quality.

I have everything I need except for a subwoofer. I was going to go with an Adire Audio Brahma 10D4, but after doing a search on here I see that they are not readily available and their customer service is not that great.

My car is going in to have the equipment installed on the 17th of April so I need something I can get in the next 2 weeks. What I want is a top of the line sub that has great sound quality, can play loud when need be and that does not need a big enclosure as all of the equipment will be going into a Nissan 350Z. In addition, the sub needs to be a 10," 4 Ohm, with Dual Voice Coils and be able to handle 600 watts.

Lastly, can you please include the best place to purchase the sub as well.

Here is the rest of the equipment so you know what I am looking for.

Headunit: McIntosh MX406

Meter Module: McIntosh MPM4000

Components: Morel Elate 6 3 Ways ( I will not be running rear deck speakers at all)

Amplifiers: 2 McIntosh MCC404M's (one for driver's side set of 3 Way Components, the other for passenger's side set of 3 way Components), and 1 McIntosh MCC301M (Subwoofer amp)

Thanks in advance
Kwame
P.S.

I am not interested in getting a JL sub, its just not for me. I want the Adire sub but I hear they have horrible customer service and no one has them in stock, not even Adire. I want something badass and exotic to match the rest of my system. I know you guys will come up with some good recommendations.

Thanks
Kwame

Well you do have some nice equipment that you will be installing, so as you said, I wouldn't settle for just an average sub. A JL is far inferior to the sound quality of the equipment you will be installing.

For top SQ with a dual voice coil is tough. Most of your top of the line manufaturuers don't use dual voice coils in their sub lines. One sub taht I can suggest is the Boston G510 dual 4 ohm sub. It is a very tight and loud sub. I had one of these in my Xterra being fed 400 watts sealed in .75 cu ft and it was so damn clean. I can just imagine another 200 watts into it....... <drools>
Here's the Boston G5 sub (also comes dual 2 ohm):

If you are willing to go with single 4 ohm coils, look at Vifa/Peerless/ScanSpeak subs. Here is their newest design that has gotten some nice feedback from what I've read:

I thought of the RE's first, but don't they only come dual 2 ohm coils in any of their 10"? I could be wrong.

And I agree Image Dynamics are nice subs, IMHO, better than JL. An IDQ should be a nice match to the SQ of the rest of his components.......hopefully.

I just wish ID would get rid of that UGLY turquios color!!!!! That is the whole reason I went with Diamond instead of an IDQ.

Hey Kwame, After re-reading your initial post, do you need two 4ohm coils or two 2ohm coils to give you a final impedence of 4ohms?

Initially I thought you meant you wanted dual 4ohm coils, but I am second guessing that now.

HARRYPOTTER 04-04-2007 12:08 PM

he means a 4 ohm speaker with dual voice coils...

Kwame 04-04-2007 12:10 PM

Man, you guys helped me more in 1 hour than those momos over in that car audio forum did all day. As per my installers instructions I need a 4 ohm Dual Voice Coil sub, sorry if that doesn't help but I think that means I need 2 4 ohm coils.

I think I am going to go with the IDMAX sub, I am hearing nothing but rave reviews about it.

why are you guys hating on JL? from my understanding I thought JL audio was the best period.. please sombody school me... I just spend so much money on a sound system and most of it is JL audio.

kwame@z1 i just dropped off my car at sound tracks for my audio install in center reach? i wish i new were your shop is

HARRYPOTTER 04-04-2007 12:17 PM

lol...LJ is not THE BEST, but it's one of the upper middle class so to speak... I don't think it's worth spending that much money on systems unless you are going to use quite a bit of Dynamat or anything similar, because the Z has alot of interior noises/ Road noises. But this syatem should sound really good (the one Kwame is putting together.

but hey on the other hand...don't be fooled b y name brands too...if everything is done right you can make a middle class system sound better than a top of the line one... it just takes more time. :)

Sound Trax is an awesome shop, they did the work on Adam's car. We are located on Middle Country Road a.k.a. dealership row. We are down the street from Smithtown Nissan and across the street from the volvo dealership.

^^^ Agreed about name brands.....Example - those Dayton subs on PartsExpress are some amazing subs!!! Taht Titanic MkIII is a beast.

And nobody is HATING on JL......Just looking at the list of equipment that Kwame is installing, it appears as though he is going for top of the line SQ. JL are nice mainstream market subs, but they are not the best for a pure SQ application.

I just question Kwame's choice of the IDMax over the IDQ for this application........They are both nice, but I thought the IDQ was more SQ and the IDMax was more SPL.

hiz-n-herz 04-04-2007 12:24 PM

I agree about the Image Dynamics IDMAX sub. Unbelievable sound in Bing's [16PSIBrick's] Impreza wagon. Drum beats were very sharp with little decay. Low frequency extension was very linear and it blended very well with the front mid-bass. Of course a lot of that sound quality can be attributed to the installer. The z interior volume is about 1/2 of that size so it should sound even better (louder) and might even fit into a smaller enclosure.

I am running way too much power for an IDQ
