[PIC] My dream system is nearly done

This diagram is what I am building right now.
My main theme is 'Look as stock as possible with aftermarket products :)

Right now, a stereo shop is working on fiberglass inclosure for 2 JL 10' that I'm gonna put in the spare-tire well. I'm also thinking to paint it with exactly same color as aluminium Z-logoed brace panel in the truck.

PS2 is working just fine.

The sony headunit produces exactly same color as other lighting in the car which is simply awsome.

Alpine 6.5' LCD working just fine too.

I cant comment on sound quality at this stage since it is still in progress.

I'll keep posting on this project within couple of days.

Thx

Very nice! Nice touch with going as stock looking as possible as well.

alphared 12-28-2002 11:18 PM

whoa where did you purchase the HU, I can't find it anywhere

Toronto350Z 12-29-2002 12:01 AM

You can't buy this HU directly in the States or Canada since it is only available in Japanese market.

BUT, U can order one from some internet sites.

I guss this thread is very useful - https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....&highlight=dvd

Before you make decision to order, you have to consider... there is no warranty for this HU. You can't fix it in US(you have to send it back to Japan which is huge pain in my ass:icon8
No FM. Radio freq. range is diffrent in Japan but if you pay more, it is possible to get FM freq. adjuster along with this HU.(extra US$100~150)
And also, it is pretty costy. At the same price(maybe even cheaper), you can get a decent HU with XM radio, MP3 compatibilty, better sound quality.. etc. And since this Sony HU is little bit smaller than original Bose(or non Bose) HU, you have to make(or buy) some kinda dash trim for filling in the gap.

Most serious problem is... too many orange circles going around you :D

Anyone2u 12-29-2002 07:24 AM

That looks fantastic!!! How long has the whole process taken and (I'll ask the inevitable question that someone usually ends up asking) if you don't mind saying, how much did it set you back? Also where are the subs and the amps going? And finally how much longer before you get it back?

IMHO, Sony should use the great picture you took of the stereo face open to market it, as it looks so cool with the blue lights streaming over the controls and the "brushed" metal face revealed. Great job.
http://one.new21.org/350/in4.jpg

Edit: Just saw that the subs are going in the spare tire well. :o

Monkey Man 12-29-2002 08:31 AM

Zakira 12-29-2002 09:35 AM

Man, your system is HOTTTTT! I gotta do the same.

abz123 12-29-2002 01:21 PM

I love that head unit....blends in very well with the rest of the interior.

Gives the interior a real circular theme. So very beautiful! Best set-up I've seen (or prolly will ever see) in the Z--

wingnuttyz 12-29-2002 01:54 PM

That's so tight it hurts! How's the Nav working? Is that unit easy to use?

Toronto350Z 12-29-2002 02:34 PM

Anyone2u.

The whole process takes full 7 days since it involves a lot of custom jobs like making a new dash trim, a silver painted sub inclosure, dynamatting, PS2 wiring, Navigation wiring and etc.
More custom job(labour) = More money. :(
If you don't want to make a new sub inclosure, instead, puttin only 1 10' into the stock sub location save a lot of money. Say... $1500? :) And you don't actually have to use two amps since the HU already has built-in 208w amp inside.
PM me if you really interested how much this setup cost.

Alpine Nav is CD-based and discontinued while ago so I could save couple of grand.(spent only $400) Not much diff. from DVD base but 1 CD only contains 4~7 states so you have to get several CD's to cover whole North America. Fortunately... You can download the Alpine map CD from the internet and burn it very easily. (I don't want any Alpine personnel see this thread :D)
I have 5 CD's and I think I can drive my Z to new Maxico without any problem.(By the way, I live up in Canada) It is very easy to use. Even my girl friend can use. :)

The whole system looks amazingly fantastic in person(even in picture I must say), and the HU blends very good in whole interior design(both color and layout). No regret at all!

:D

rouxeny 12-29-2002 03:28 PM

That setup looks great. I've seen that HU around the 'net, but I've never actually seen it installed. It really fits with the design of the car. Many other HU's are a too blocky, too square.

My question is, how do you get the nav audio and DVD/PS2 audio to play?

I want to get a nav system, but I'd like for the audio to come through the system speakers, not through a separate nav speaker. I still haven't heard if this is possible. Well, I know it's possible, the stock NAV is like that, but I don't know about with an aftermarket nav.

where did you put your Alpine Nav unit?

Toronto350Z 12-29-2002 04:47 PM

sorry, can't answer that Q because I have a separate NAV speaker.

I put the Alpine Nav unit where a stock nav sits. Fit and finish is awesome and also, you can close the NAV-glove compartment door.

Importlife.com 12-29-2002 06:24 PM

APPLAUSE!

that is the best application of a Double Din I have ever seen, other than maybe a manufacturer car.

great choice and job! I wish I could go double din, but because of some performance projects i have in store I need all the storage bins i can free up.

but wow. makes me want to buy another Z and keep it stock with just that audio/nav setup.

"Jealousy is a female trait" so, CONGRATULATIONS!

i honeslty been busy with the business, importlife.com. but get this, I locked myself out of my old user name! dont ask me how. but the worst part is now I am classified as a "newbie" lol. hopefully Tako will throw me the points I had before so i can at least choose my own avatar. rofl.

But i am back. and from the looks of it i have missed out on a lot of activity here. but stay tuned for some big things in 2003.

Congrats again to the hottest double din application. I am still wowed!

Vlad 12-30-2002 08:55 AM

Sony unit blends awesome into interior...

But can you please tell me what you going to do with Playstation in the car? I don't have one, but suspect it's to play games, right? But then, you can't play games when you are driwing? Then what you need it for?

Old Skooler 12-30-2002 09:01 AM

Simply incredible. I'm jealous!!!!! Thank you for posting these! The Sony unit compliments the Z perfectly, I have to go with that whenever I get some money...

Toronto350Z 12-30-2002 01:19 PM

PS2 is for my GF. :D seriously..

I know I can't play PS2 while I'm driving, but I have two more RGB input left for LCD besides NAV unit, and there was PS2 I haven't played for 3 months or so... Why not? I just hooked it up for SHOW Purpose :D :D
On the highway, I watch DVD movie or DVD music video.
Pretty neat.

Toronto350Z 12-30-2002 03:28 PM

Pix of the Nav unit. You can close the mini-door.

I found every Alpine Nav unit can fit in there without a problem.

Importlife.com 12-30-2002 03:48 PM

So if you got a Sony CD Changer that plays MP3 CDs, you cannot control with the Japan Sony head unit?

And could you PM me the installer contact? I would like to learn more about the custom dash unit.

Thanks,

Matt

Toronto350Z 12-30-2002 09:09 PM

Since the HU is the latest HU from Sony, it can control any kind CD/MP3/MD changer made by SONY. You know what? I just bought(today) Sony CDX-65, 10 cd changer, it works great. It was made in 1994  I paid US$50 for the changer:D I saw somebody else playing with 10 CD/MP3 changer while ago. So, again, no problem.

I left my stereo shop business card in my GF house so, as soon as i get it back. I'll PM ya.

Importlife.com 12-30-2002 09:17 PM

Thanks man!

Greatly appreciated

GaryM05 12-30-2002 09:35 PM

Wow, that looks great!

Do you mind if I ask what product(s) you use to detail your interior? I like the understated 'glisten' you've got in there. Thanks!

Gary

Whoaaaaa

What a clean, great looking install. That HU looks amazing... If I change from factory that looks like a good unit. I'd like some more info about the NAV system. Been looking for something but they're all in the $1500-2000 range. A bit steep since I just dumped $$$$$ fro my setup...

alphared 01-04-2003 10:55 AM

what are the dimensions of the nav unit?

amai21 01-05-2003 08:09 PM

I notice on one of your posts, you say that you watch dvd's on it?
The HU does not play dvd's, unless if iam wrong. So how are you doing this?
I must say though, your setup is hella phat!!!!

Toronto350Z 01-05-2003 09:00 PM

Sorry for late reply.

To amai21
PS2 has built-in DVD play function. It's a game console though

To alphared
I don't exactly know what the NAV dimensions are.. but as u can see from my pics, it fits small glove-compartment perfectly without serous modification.

To GaryM05
I just use 'WATER' to clean the interior of my Z.

Bostonian 01-06-2003 09:31 AM

Took the words right out of my mouth.

..."Look as stock as possible with aftermarket products " That what I have been looking for on this site for a while. That HU is made for this car. Great job, can't say enough good things about that install. I am getting mine(Z)in the spring and that is the unit I am going with, plain and simple. I do not care how much it takes to get that installed. I will probably just go with the HU,NAV and change the PS2 for a DVD. I just hope I can find a shop that with do such good work, especially the trim around the HU in the dash, top notch work. Congrats

SZ350 01-06-2003 04:09 PM

That looks really nice.....I am looking for a screen to watch DVDs. Which one is better Sony or Alpine....plus someone was saying something about a touch screen by Kenwood.

Mikey Likes It 01-07-2003 04:11 AM

Focals...

How is the fit/sound of the Focals? I'm looking at getting a set of the 165K's. Are they worth the money?

Mike

phreezee 01-08-2003 09:31 AM

Focals are DEFINATELY WORTH IT!!!

TheOne 01-09-2003 10:03 AM

simply amazing...please post pictures as the "process" is being completed...

fastpace 01-09-2003 10:48 AM

WOW!

 i'm shocked! that's the best head unit i have ever seen!
does it play cd's internally? or was that an MD player? i must admit that as soon as my 350 comes in i'm gona jump at that. is there any info in english that we might be able to read about?

Toronto350Z 01-09-2003 08:30 PM

Hold your breath, guys.
Everything is supposed to finish tommorow and I'll post more pics tommorows evening.
I saw how the custom sub-inclosure fits in the trunk today morning and I can say... only 2 words.

Simply incredible

The deck is a dual CD&MD player and the how-to-use is pretty intuitive.

As 'phreezee' metioned, Focal speakers are definately worth every penny. Focal spkers are one of the best component spker sets you can get in the market IMO.

SeanRod 01-10-2003 02:45 PM

Dude!!!
What you have done is pure genius!!! I mean WOW!!! Thanks for posting this.

Can this head unit to XM Radio?

Toronto350z:

If you look at the product description for Sony's XM radio module, it says it only needs a sony head unit that is Unilink compatible and has CD changer controls.

Am I assuming correctly that means I can use XM radio with this head unit (without the aid of a stupid FM modulator)?

Also, would you happen to know if there is a limit to the amount of changers attached to the head unit (i'm thinking XM, CD, MD, etc...)

Thanks in advance for answering...

Monkey Man 01-10-2003 04:49 PM

I am curious about the custom dash trim that you installed. Can you purchase those, or do they have to be made from scratch. I have my headunit, and I'm anxious to get everything else together before we do our audio install. The one you show in the pictures has a beautiful texture to it. I guess I also need to source an FM modulator.

-Jeremy

Toronto350Z 01-10-2003 09:44 PM

To 350boom.

There is one more aux input besides CD-changer input behind the Sony HU. In other words, you can hook up at least 2 different sound sources. I'm very positive that this HU can control 'Sony' XM radio without any problem.. or at least, you dont have to use FM modulator.

To Monkey Man.
You have to make the custom dash trim from scratch. Can't help with that.... But any reputable sterero shop should make it 'cause it is not a big job for them.

Toronto350Z, it's a shame you guys don't have XM up there. I really want to go with the 7700mdx with my install, but I can't do it unless it's compatible with XM.

Anybody out there tried to use the 7700mdx with Sony's XT-XM1 Satellite Radio receiver? Anyone?

Thanks in advance!

Trackbite 01-14-2003 10:49 AM

Toronto350Z,
Where did you find that HU? I've looked around and only managed to find it at www.melting-pot.com

I understand this HU is only sold in Japan. Did you have any trouble with it picking up U.S. radio frequencies?

Finally, does the NAV play DVD movies? If so, is it hardwired to the HU or does it transmit the signal to the reciever?

mart32 01-14-2003 02:08 PM

WTB bose HU

Hi toronto 350Z

you setup is very impressive...
im also looking to upgrade my sound system( focal 165k3, JL10W3 and phoenix gold amps waiting in my closet) as soon as my car arrives...db track comming late april

but i want to keep it looking stock and as you know, in the track model the HU does not come with the 6 disk dash charger.

so i was wondering if you want to sell your bose HU since you dont need it anymore.

if so keep me inform,. thanks

BTW i'm kind of new on this forum and my first language is french so don't think i don't know how to write ...i just doing my best

Toronto350Z 01-14-2003 04:27 PM

To mart32

Thanx for your comment. My first language is not English either. :)
I was gonna keep the Original Bose unit because I will need it when I sell my car in future. But if your offer is reasonable price, then I'm willing to sell. I guess u live in Quebec, do you? Then you don't have to pay tax. It's good thing :) (I live in Toronto) Just send me a Personal Massange. Thx.

To Trackbite.
You didn't read the whole thread carefully, did you? All information is attached to the thread.

Nav unit is CD-based so does not play DVD but PS2 does.
The Sony HU does have problem picking up US radio freq because the range ends up 90 Hz or something.(US radio freq range goes all the way up 108, doesn't it?) So.. You need the radio FM range modulator.

There are two ways to get this unit.
1. go to www.pricejapan.com
2. go to www.melting-pot.com

melting pot.com installs the FM range modulator for free.
But they charge you US$700 + shipping.

I bought it from pricejapan and send them US$600 including shipping cost.(They don't install Fm modulator to the HU)

So basically, you pay US$120 for FM modulator.

My suggestions is that.. If you really want the FM modulator, order the HU from melting pot.

If you want to save some money or you will install XM radio add-ons later, go with PriceJapan.

Good luck ya'll

bigdog 01-14-2003 04:37 PM

Kudos, outstanding job, 2 questions, the dolar value of the system, and how weight did it add to the car.

TheOne 01-14-2003 05:59 PM

i got a question: when are we going to see more pictures?? :D

Toronto350Z 01-14-2003 06:14 PM

2 X JL 10' Sub -> 2 x 14 lbs = 28 lbs

two JL amps -> 2 x 11 lbs = 22 lbs

custom inclosure = 40 lbs

Dynamat = 7 lbs

Bulkier Wires = 7 lbs.

Nav Unit + LCD = 5 lbs.

-> 109 lbs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a spare tire (32 lbs), Entire Tool Kit (9 lbs),cargo floor mat + plastic cover (1 lbs), bose amp(8 lbs) = 50 lbs

They are gone.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
109 - 50 =

total 59 lbs (+- 5 lbs) gained.

If U go further on weight reduction, remove ur pre-silencer(4 lbs):D

+59 lbs is not that bad but definately it will slow your Z tenth of second. But u get what u pay for. Great Sound  And the other good thing is.. now, my Z's weight distribution is somewhere around 50-50??? :D :D :D

Toronto350Z 01-14-2003 06:23 PM

To TheOne.

About a month ago, Some idiot bumped my brand new 350z in the parking lot and I have been waiting for the new door part.(There is no door part in Canada so.. it was shipped from Japan a month ago) I got the phone call 2 days ago telling the parts was in. My Beutiful Z is in a bodyshop right now:( :( :( :D :D :D

It's gonna take a while to fix it. I'll post some more pix anytime next week.

U know what? The bodyshop gave me a Dodge Caravan as Rental car....
