If you are up in Michigan then you get some rain, and that pretty much nixes any DOT-R compound. No matter what the tread, even the RA-1, that is just not going to make it with water on streets. And that is assuming you don't mind only getting 5,000 miles out of them, especially if you run the track a couple of times.

I like the Enkei NT03+M for wheels that you can use on street and track.

For the tire............I like the lightweight rubber compounds from Toyo/Nitto and Michelin. Then often run three to four pounds per tire lighter than the other brands.

I successfully ran REO50 and REO50A (non pole position) for about 15 track events. They handled well, good wear, and squealed like a pig at high slip angles. The squealing really helps a track newbie work up to speed. And is it is very good street tire for the price. I would assume that the REO50A pole position would be a great choice

so if I go same all around I'll be at 275/40/18 on 18x9.5.

If I go staggered, It'll be a 18x9.5 rear and 18x8.5 front. But what about tire sizes? Still go with 275/40/18 rear? 245/40/18 fronts?

Now the next thing to decide: Staggered or Same size all around......

IMO a F425 and R275 will likley lead to more understeer than wanted (driving style, suspension set-up, tire pressures,...will all affect this too) - personally if I were to be buying new tires for track days, I'd get a square set-up and possibly dial in a bit of understeer via suspension/alignment - that way you're less likely to oversteer in high speed sweepers and still able to rotate tires for even wear.

Does your car have VDC? If it does, and you don't want to completely disable the VDC, go with a stagged setup...

Note: It isn't hard to remove the yaw sensor, but you may not want to do that for other reasons.

Nope, no VDC. Just an 05' Enthusiast with TCS. At my last (and first) driving school, my instructor told me to leave it on. However, I do take it off during auto-x and I sometimes fish tail when I'm pushing it too hard. But haven't spun out yet, recovered each time :)

Why not buy wheels that you can use in case you decided to make your car a SCCA T-2 car? The rules state you can run 9x18 fronts and 10x18 rears. We run those and have a 22mm spacer in front and about 8mm rear spacer. We also run 285x18 Kumho 710 tires which meet the rules. With those wheels and spacers it brings the tires out to the edge of the fenders. I can help you get a discount with the wheels as Enkei sponsors us and if you are interested in take-off tires with one weekend on them, I can help you there too.

Bridgestone RE01R, you can get them from TireRack in your price range. My last set of tires was the RE050A and I enjoyed those for autocross/track as well. Can't go wrong with either.

I think you can rotate the RE01R's off the rim as well (unlike the RE050 series). Which I need to consider doing as I have a lot of high speed left turns at my local tracks.

yea I was considering RE01R's but they don't come in the 275's.

What do you guys think of 275/35's vs 275/40's?

And racerbob, I don't think I'm gonna go that hardcore yet. This is still a DD. If I eventually start tracking a lot, then I may think about T2

18x9.5 +20 Rota Torques all around (yea yea I know ppl don't like rotas, but knowing me I'd want to change wheels within a couple years anyways)
275/35/18 Bridgestone RE050's Pole Position all around.

Stock suspension, stock everything else

Any comments?

RE050A PPs and Pilot PS2s both worked great for me (well, as "great" as a street tire will be). The RE050s were especially good in the rain (kept them around as spares when I switched to Sport Cups, very glad I did).
