Let me know if anyone is interested. Registration is not open yet. |

not aug 13
Please not aug. 13th, Thats the day Just drift will be ruinning the east loop at buttowillow!
I swear JD and DD set their events on the same day just to mess with each other. Half their events are on the same damn day! It messes with me because I am part of Just Drift but I still love going to the ddays(besides the fact that I hate clipping cones, thats called autocross or in this instance driftcross). Please find another date, I really want to make it there! |
ditto, im pretty set on buttonwillow.
|
I'm envious. Our drifting events have been cancelled pending a new race track IF that ever happens.

I might have to bring the Corolla to this :icon38:

Man, I've been wanting to go drifting for a while now. I need to install my Nismo LSD and Brembos. I ordered Volks last month and am waiting for them to come in because I was under the impression that a full set of wheels was needed for Drift Day due to a lack of on-site tire mounting service. I guess if I just need tires, like you guys are saying, I better get that LSD installed by the 13th.
|
Oh there's a drift related question I've been meaning to ask. I have an 06 with the adaptive power steering. I'm assuming this is going to be a big negative for drifting. Anyone know of a way to disable it?
|
^^^
It's actually not that bad. |
Wholey Smokes, I don't know too much about that adaptive setup.
But KEEP the power steering, especially with a car this heavy. And depending on where we run there is a tire facility on site. Irrwindale is one of the only places that dosen't have one. Willow springs and Buttonwillow have tire shops on site. And you can always run to a local tire shop if you don't like getting ripped off. And just one extra pair of wheels/tires should be good for a beginner. (2 more couldn't hurt) If you can't get that lsd in, come out anyways. The viscous works just fine to learn with. Plus you won't be beating on that brand new lsd. |

I did some research on the nismo lsd and found nothing. If anyone can tell me what type of diff it is that would help. There are about a dozen different types.
The stock viscous works with a bunch of plates stacked up with viscous fluid surrounding them. When the viscous fluid gets to a certain temperature it changes viscosity. It gets thicker and sticks the plates together locking the rear wheels. This is why is dosen't work so well, it has to get hot before it locks. This causes the diff to not work as immediate at one would desire. You'll get on the gas and have to wait for the fluid to heat up and then it will lock. But it does work pretty damn well, I used mine for at least a year before it broke. At least 20 events and canyon runs alomst every night. It takes more balls to drive with this diff, you think it's not gonna lock, but it will if you stay on the gas. The Kaaz 1.5 lsd I can comment on because thats what I use now. This is a clutch type lsd. It works like a clutch, the harder you get on the gas the more it locks. It's similar to the viscous in constuction, it's a bunch of plates stacked up with gear oil. You can control how much locking you want by how you stack the plates, but you have to disassemble it. This is a GREAT lsd. The car immediately responds to every little input of the throttle. I've heard they break often, but mines been ok. All I found out about the nismo lsd was that is is tuned for city driving as well as motorsports. This tells me it's probably not as agressive as the kaaz lsd. And it's adjustable without disassembleing, thats a big plus. Honestly this is probably the best lsd for the daily driver/weekend racer. The kaaz unit locks a little too much for street driving, especially in the rain. The nismo is easily adjustable, so you can easily adjust your car for street and track driving. Everthing I've heard about the nismo lsd seems good, I'd just like to know what kind of lsd it is! My guess is it's somwhere in between the kinda locking viscous and the extreme locking kaaz. When is comes down to it, an lsd is an lsd. Welded diffs don't bother me, in fact they work great untill they break. And open diffs work great, on dirt. The viscous works fine, don't go breaking the bank thinking you need a diff to drift. In fact, if you've got less than 30 or 40k on the car, keep that viscous in there and get some good use out of it. Then when you put in your new lsd your skills will be more than ready. |
The Nismo LSD is a clutch type LSD. My manuals say that it can be changed between 1.5 and 2 way and that "initial torque" can be changed from 50.6, 68.7, or 101 ft-lbs.
636Racer, have you drifted with the 06s power steering? That's great news if it isn't that bad. I know that at really high speeds my car feels like it is understeering really bad. I'd never think of removing the system, though. I just installed the Nismo power steering cooler, in fact. As to not installing my Nismo LSD, I bought a Base model (I knew I'd be modifying it) so I have an open diff. right now. I was going to install the diff. myself but the cost of all the special tools I'd need is over $600 so I guess I'll try to make an appointment with a dealer this weekend. |
The stock Viscous is fine to start. I Drifted my first session with the stock G35 LSD. Then I planted a NISMO. I do not like the loud noise of the NISMO so if any of you want to buy it cheap, it is yours.
Will get a Quaife after this weeks racing at California Speedway. The LSD helps to get the wheels spinning out of the gate, then it is purely skill, not car with Throttle control and THE FORCE...LOL NOTE: Stock Zs and Gs are perfect for Drifting even on the Stock wheels and tires. M :) |
Mike-
make sure with all these guys that are comin' to the track they have good helmets that DriftDay will sign off on- also. with august 13- i might be iffy. i dunno if my engine will be done and broken in by then.. poo! :( but i'll come out for fun and i'll being my suction cup Video mount if i do- :) |
thanks for the info on the LSD, good write up
|
im running my nismo on the 2nd lock setting(68.7% I guess) and I had it switched to 2 way. I didnt think it was that noisy though, if you want quiet, buy a cusco RS.
andrew, The nismo is quite agressive though, and very noisy, 2nd only to the kaaz as far as noise. I havent tried out most LSDs so im a terrible person to compare bite. |

AHHHH wholey smokes, not an open diff on a Z! Yeah your gonna want to put that nismo in there. Open diffs suck! They are good to learn with on the streets, because they're VERY hard to drift with. Then once you get a diff or a car with a diff your in a whole new world of steering with the throttle. And you'll have knowlege of the vehicle movements to try to break traction.
According to bobbarker the nismo is pretty agressive even on the 2nd setting. On the final setting the lsd should lock very well. As far as noise, the kaaz is pretty loud if you need to change the fluid. |
Noisy RaceCars are cool.
Yet I kinda like 800 WHP Daily Quiet... M :) |
Tomei y0. has anyone heard anything about the Tomei LSD?
|
I personally hated the stock Diff on the car for me i felt it give out and was terrible for me when i got the car sideways it would hold then let loosse. Tottally felt the ****ty viscous in it. Id like to grab a nismo lsd for my spare diff. lets talk a price
|
Man this sounds like it going to rock!

on other cars the tomei is supposed to be great. But that doesn't mean its good for our cars. |
Tomei and Nismo GT are the same, just no initial torque setting on the Tomei
VRT, You should reconsider the Quiafe if your planning on drifting regularly, it sucks for drift :( good for road race though :) For the guy with open diff, you could always weld it if you're planning on upgrading to LSD in future but don't have time or budget now...;) |
tomei lsd's are usually re-baged kaaz units with tomei's own touch to make the lsd even more agressive.
brandon-get the os giken...drool:) |
