Z and G Beginner Drift Day

Hello Everyone,

In the recent months a few of us with VRT have had the wild hair to learn the art of Drifting. It isn't easy yet IMO it is the single greatest car control skill I have experienced.

I met Naoki the Manager of Drift Day as well as a bunch of great Drifters. Their staff have asked VRT if we would like to plan and organize a Z and G Beginner/Intermediate Drift Day Event here in Southern Cali.

If it sounds interesting, please hit this thread up. Usually the cost is a couple hundered bucks per day and I am sure some world class Drift Pros will attend to give us all some pointers.

Here is some video of our first two Drift Events where we actually were taught by Taka Aono, won of Formula Ds best Pros and after graduating the Drift 101 Class, here is what I can Do. Now, I road race alot, so I am not green behind the wheel, yet I NEVER REALLY COULD DRIFT until now. It is awesome!

Let me know.

I'd be interested.

FrickU 07-13-2006 11:05 PM

Hey Guys, I went up with mike to this Drift Day event, and let me tell you it was a complete blast...Drifting is one of the most fun things i have ever done. Especially when you are learning from Top 10 professional D1 drivers.

The Black G in there is mine:)

I would very much encourage everyone to go.

The classes are worth every penny...Even if oyu don't plan on becoming a drifter or anything this is a Great Car Control experience.

And if you come to the class, don't forget to bring another set of tires:):)

Alot of fun and the best driving skills for Road and Track for sure.

Want to make this clear, we are promoting this because I feel it is amazing and we all good stand to become better drivers no matter what your current level. Always room for improvement!

Chebosto 07-14-2006 08:17 AM

I'll be down to come out! (i dunno when my Z will be done)

Taka is way cool! Yoshie (his gf) is a great drifter too! She encourages all the female drivers to come out too!!

SinCity350Z 07-14-2006 08:29 AM

I would love to go, but I am nowhere near prepared. The only set of wheels/tires I have is the Nismos with expensive Sport Cup tires, and I am not burning those up. I will have to see if my OEM track model 18s clear the APs. Then get a set of street tires for those. When is it?

ihatethatbobbarker 07-14-2006 08:52 AM

if its an all Z event, ill see if naoki could use some staff help and bring out my Z.

Tires Should Not be an excuse. We all have some crap tires, OEM and you only NEED rears tires...

Hurry up already - Cheston...

Everyone - Promise you will not be dissapointed. I am just a beginner, yet it is incredible and has already helped me to be a way better driver with only two times out.

Cool. We all need practice and I see this as the safest and most responsible way. Better than some street drifting which is pretty dangerous.

Will start to keep a tally.

Just want to come with the Drift Boys with a real group before I start talking real Plans...

Thanks.

M
:)

Gary King 07-14-2006 01:40 PM

Let's pick a date and start a list. How many would you need to make it work?

As for tires, I'm thinking of just putting the stock rears on the back. When I burn those off I'll put the stock fronts on back. Won't be the prettiest setup but that should work right? After I burn up 4 tires I think I'll call it a day.

Gary

Thats my plan. Just need tires for the OEM track wheels. I have autocross compound Hoosiers on them right now, which I am guessing wouldn't last too long at a drift day :D. Maybe I can find an empty parking lot for 30 min to burn them up.

Gary King 07-14-2006 01:55 PM

I'd say save the Hoosiers and I could order you a set of cheap tires with a good wear rating for the drift day. When your done with the drift tires just have your hoosiers remounted and your ready for autocross again.

I don't do autocross anymore. I have driven on them probably once in the past year. I will talk to you when it comes time to order tires though :D.

liudacris 07-14-2006 02:32 PM

What are the requirements? I noticed Drift Day requires an extra set of wheels and preferrably adjustable suspension.

mrtomcat 07-14-2006 04:02 PM

another set of tires and an LSD other than that the Z is good to go

I defniately interested. All Zs and Gs would be cool. I know dd has been useding Irrwindale alot, hopefully we can use the bank!

FYI the car(Zs and Gs) need no mods to drift well, you can drift like a champ in them right out of the dealer. There are not many 'stock' cars that you can upshift to 3rd mid-drift and keep em spinning. A stock ride that can make the bank at irrwindale is hard to find, especially for our budgets. And you can even get a D1 licence in the stock car, Sam Hubunette(spelled wrong) has done it in a rental Z and I did it in my Z, all I had was an rsr exhaust.

I would be interested depending on when this event takes place. Never had the guts to drift my G fearing that i'd mess it up. I would have to ship my stock rims from norcal down to socal though. How do you guys think stocker1 225 pilot sports would hold up in the rear w/ a vortech?? :icon11:

For any reason Naoki can't take care of it, let me know. I am staff/instructor for Just Drift. We can have our choice of 3 tracks at willow springs.

The budwieser balcony, a small track with only a few turns, but it's great to learn on because the main corner has a skid pad on the outside. The skidpad is also great for beginers to practice doughnuts(mmmm) and figure 8's.

Walt james oval is a great track that a little more complicated. It's a bit faster than the balcony but it has ample runoff so you wont ruin your car. It's an oval with a road though the middle, we run around the oval and through the center and back out onto the oval. It's a fun track because you go full throttle almost the whole time, this is what makes it hard on underpowered cars and beginers. The pic of my car was taken here.

The horse theif mile, definately my favorite track I've even been on. A 1 mile track that shoots up and down a steep hillside with a canyon feel to it. Not a good spot for beginers but if you've been to a few track events you should be fine.

Naoki should be able to handle it, and besides I'd rather run Irrwindale anyways. Let me know if you need any help.

there really isnt much space at irwindale to do so. unless you have another suggestion, there will be half the infield used for donuts, and the other used by the full track, just like drift day last thursday.

just join the group that runs the full track, its not that bad:).

mraturbo, i think i met you at drift day. i, along with hatebobbarker and possibly shmately, would be happy to just hang out and give advice:)

Very cool.

I was the donut man my last DriftDay and then went to the full track. The track is where it is at...However, it helps to have some instruction and donuts/Eights for absolute beginners.

Everyone needs to start somewhere.

We could also have our own run group at Just Drifts upcoming buttonwillow event. We will be running the east loop on august 13th. Buttonwillow is 150 miles from l.a. and I think 190 from san jose. It's far away, damn far away if anything breaks. But it is the closest and longest real road course that allows drifting.

Let me know if anyone is interested. Registration is not open yet.

ihatethatbobbarker 07-17-2006 07:45 AM

i think ill sign up for that with or without them :D
