Looking into getting a Z, but what's the best/cheapest way to create noticable power?

So I currently have an 07 GTI, that has been reflashed with APR stage 2 software, 3" catless DP etc etc, and I now have about 230 whp and 275 lbs tq. Although it's nice, that's about as much as I can do without going bigger turbo, and complete kits for VW's are so over priced it's laughable. For 300 whp you're lookin at $4k atleast, unless you can get it wholesale then you're looking at about 3k. Anyway, I'm ready to move on. So Im pretty stuck on either an EVO or STI, but I was also thinking about a Z because that's what I wanted before my GTI but I wound up getting the VW instead. The Z is all around cheaper to buy used so that's why Im considering it, but I know I wouldn't be happy with the stock power cause I've test drove two before. So is there a cheaper way to really make this car quicker, like in the 12 second range? Idealy around 2-3k max on power mods, cause I'd still have to do wheels, springs etc. It wont be easy since a few friends have dope evo's but maybe if I can make a Z quick, I'd just get one. Any advice or help?

welcome, try scanning through this thread.

plenum spacer, exhaust, intakes, NOS, pulleys, things like that are cheap and can have a pretty good band for the buck.

thank you, I read through there and it helped some, but doesn't really help answer my question. are there mods that can be done we'll say in the 2k range that can make a Z a 12 second DD?

NOT including NOS. no nitrous. ew.

no not really around 2k. It will be very hard to hit even 12.9 without spending over 2k. Nitrous is the only way to go for that cheap.

maybe a used SC for under 3k then?

still you would need a new clutch, and while you are at that, you get a flywheel, gauges, engine management system, a tune, new tires..etc, you are already up 6-8k

if ur lookin to make power with the Z for a cheap price i suggest u not get it. its not necessarily "mod friendly"

Mrpeepers Nov 15, 2007 10:15 PM

dont get a Z

steppinrazor Nov 15, 2007 10:20 PM

i believe z turbo or sc are quite a bit more than vw, along with other mods

CEO350Z Nov 15, 2007 10:24 PM

to get 12sec, you're going to need forced induction...a twin turbo maybe....but then if you want 12sec and build the engine, the cost would be around $15K+ (parts AND labor......many people forget about the labor)

and even with that, the engine won't be 100% bulletproof....

CEO350Z Nov 15, 2007 10:27 PM

the z is one of the most mod unfriendly cars i've ever owned....i spent more on the z than my evo 8 ever needed....3:1 ratio....

Spork Nov 15, 2007 10:37 PM

For a sub 12=second z... you'll need a fully built engine and a turbo kit to RELIABLY boost your Z.

The only other ways to get a 12-sec Z WITHOUT using nitrous are gonna be these...

Buy an '07. Buy some slicks. Go to the track.

OR...

Buy an '07. Buy all power mods available for the '07 (intakes, test pipes, either true dual exhaust or Y-pipe and single exhaust). Go to track.

OR...

Combine both of the above.

OR...

Buy used Z that's already boosted.

There's your quickest ways.

Id look for a used or group buy on a Vortech or Turbonetics kit. I would tune it to around 330-350 hp. You could keep the stock clutch for a good while like that (I had 15k miles @ 365 hp on my old stock clutch and it never died..i sold the car). If you only want a car to run 12.99, you don't need any supporting mods (exhaust plenums etc) for the Vortech/TN kit IMO.

If you go beat the car up a lot, you will need a stock clutch even NA.

bboypuertoroc Nov 16, 2007 06:24 AM

You need supporting mods... don't tell him he doesn't need them. If you're gonna do FI, you need to do it right.
